Cold Mattresses

“Dang girl, this is intense,” Gideon said as he looked over at the lyrics I’d managed to finish when we got back to mine. This song was surprisingly easy to punch out after I got those chunks out and down on paper. We were all in my living room sitting on my beaten up leather couches, the guys having responded in record time, eager to work on this song.

Leia nodded from Gideon’s lap, where she’d placed herself so she could read the lyrics at the same time. “This is a great song, Allycat. I can’t wait to get started on a beat. Do you guys have anything in mind?”

Bones nodded with a smile. “I have an idea of what the guitar could sound like but I need your opinion of it and I have no idea how the drums would sound.”

Gideon smiled as he leaned forward slightly, wrapping his arms around Leia in excitement. “When do I get to drum?” The accent he put on reminded me of Mole from Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

I laughed at his enthusiasm before speaking. “Bones needs to explain the guitar and as soon as we get that done you can drum. Shouldn’t take long, Bones is the king of guitar licks.”

Gideon made a high pitched sound in the back of his throat which we have all come to recognise as a suppressed squeal of excitement. It was adorable just how passionate he was about drumming, it was his life and his baby and nothing could take his passion away. I don’t even think Mike was as passionate as Gid was about drumming and Mike was pretty damn passionate about it.

“Alright,” Leia said happily as she clapped her hands. “Let’s get to this. Just go with the magic baby I can see it there in your eyes. Let it flow. Just use your imagination. Let it take you there.”

I looked at Leia as she smiled. “Did you seriously just quote S Club 7 as a motivational speech?”

Leia looked at me with a smirk. “Maybe.”

I nodded with a grin. “Nice.”

“I know. Now,” Leia cleared her throat as she jumped off of Gideon’s lap. “Don’t stop movin’ to that funky, funky beat.”

Bones shook his head. “We still need to make up the beat, Leia.”

“I can feel the music moving through me everywhere. Don't stop movin'. Can you feel the music, DJ's got us going around, 'round.” Leia sang as she began dancing around the table, doing the most random shuffle/dougie/hip thrust I had ever seen.

“I’m pretty sure you skipped most of the song just there, babe.” Bones said with a smile, Leia ignoring him as she continued to sing while holding up her middle finger at him.

“Come on, guys,” I spoke up. “This ain’t game, this is your life.” Before I could keep going Bones reached over and slapped his hand over my mouth with wide eyes.

“Please don’t continue. I don’t think I could handle S Club 7 and Whiskey Hands at the same time.”

Kill joy.

“How about instead of singing you guys start playing guitar? I want to play drums already.” Gideon whined the last bit but it got Leia to stop singing.

“To the garage!” Leia swung her arm up as she spun around dramatically and began marching in place, the rest of us jumping up and following her in single file.

Two hours later found us sweating, exhausted and no closer then what we were when Bones and I pitched the idea of the song. Gideon looked as if he were about to explode from the need to drum and I felt bad because he’d been waiting so patiently, even throwing in suggestions for guitar rhythms, strumming out random tunes every now and then.

Finally over how hot it had managed to get in the garage I walked over to the walk and pressed the button to open the roller door and everyone let of a collective sigh of relief as soon as the slight breeze blew in.

“Did you like, know we were out here or something?” I looked over to the garage opening to see Vic and Jaime standing in the middle of the drive way, Mike still parking his car while Tony and Kate were walking up the drive.

“Nope, hadn’t the foggiest. To be honest, I don’t even know what the time is,” I answered as I moved away from the wall and towards the fridge Gideon had brought over when he found it on the side of the road, pulling out bottles of water and tossing them to everyone.

“So it’s safe to say you forgot you were hosting family night this week?” Vic asked as he walked in and took a seat on the couch that was pushed flush up against the far wall beside the door that led into the house; Tony and Kate following his lead by taking a seat on the couch also.

“That’s today?” Leia asked in surprise, head snapping up as her attention shifted from the guitar in her lap to her boyfriend sitting across from her.

“Yep, every Thursday like clockwork.” Jaime said as he went to join Bones at one of the tables that were in here as well, looking down over our notes on what we’ve played through already.

“You guys working on a new song?” he asked, turning to look over at me with a smile.

I groaned as I walked over to the couch, collapsing on top of Vic and curling into his chest which caused him to laugh. “Yeah and so far this one is being a hard arsed bitch who won’t put out.”

“Okay,” Vic laughed as he ran a hand over my hair. “You need to stop hanging around Mike so much, you’re learning too much.”

“The day Kitten stops hanging around me is that day Gideon stops playing the drums,” Mike called as he walked up the drive, easily spotting Gideon’s longing expression as he starred at the drum kit sitting proudly in the corner of the room.

Bones snorted as he pushed himself up on the table he and Jaime were standing by. “Like that will ever happen.”

“Exactly,” Mike nodded as he walked further into the room, dropping a kiss on Leia’s head in greeting, moving to do the same to Gideon who was on mine and Vic’s left before he leaned down to kiss my cheek.

“How far in are you?” Tony asked as Mike moved to the couch that Leia was sitting on, its arm touching the arm of the couch we were sitting on, both tucked against the walls in the corner of the room.

“Alice managed to start and finish a song today and now we’re trying to find a rhythm,” Leia answered as she frowned down at her guitar. “So far we got zilch.” She picked her guitar up and reached over the arm to set in down on its stand.

“Alright guys, we did our best for today. We know these things take time, let’s just go into the house and get dinner ready.”

I looked up from Vic’s chest where I’d buried my head to look over at Bones. I loved it when he takes charge. “I saw Alice’s fridge when we got here and it’s dismal so I’ll go by the shop and pick up some stuff. I’ll be back soon.”

“Hey, it’s only empty because everyone raids it when I’m not home. I feel like Monica when she walked into the apartment to see Joey, Phoebe and Rachel eating. That’s all you do, eat my food and then disappear to your respected homes.”

Bones looked at me blankly for a moment before he raised an eyebrow. “What’s your point?”
“That was my point,” I say as I watched as he walked across the room towards the door and I rolled my eyes. There was no explaining it to these guys.

Gideon jumped up off the couch and followed Bones into the house, silently announcing that he’ll go with him. The two reappeared and walked down the drive with a shout of “See you soon” and a backwards wave.

I sighed before pushing myself off Vic, pausing to stretch before I turned to everyone. “Alright, come on, get comfy inside. I’ll go see what I can do about dinner.”

I'm baaaaaaaack.

So the main reason I haven't updated in ages is partially because I was brain dead with ideas, partially because I'm being overloaded by art shit for the 4 classes I take but mostly because my school laptop broke and I had to hand it in to get it fixed. Clearly, I have it back.

So as a head's up, I'm telling you now that the next chapters will kinda be fillers until I get to the part of the story where things start to speed up which will hopefully be soon.b
