A Light in the Dark

Four: Antidote

I hurried to the bathroom, clasping my hand over the throbbing slice. I snagged two sheets of hand napkins and wet them with water, quickly dabbing over the cut which was now encased with dry blood. I rolled my eyes at my reflection as the prominent hues of purple and blue stood out against my pale skin. I wiped away the blood thoroughly, making sure there wasn't any blood left.

My thoughts ran back to Emily and that day I scraped my knee. There were so many things I wanted to say to her, but never had the chance to do so. After Emily died, it was like she took a piece of us, meaning my mother, my father, and I with her. I shook away the glum feeling that crept into my mind and walked towards the bar counter.

"What the hell happened?" Lucky asked; his voice resembling a concerned father.

"This is the outcome of me being clumsy." I replied sheepishly while wiping a few glasses clean to keep my hands busy.

Luck chuckled before asking "Well, are you okay?"

"Yeah, if anything it's my dignity that I left on the ground." I muttered, earning another chuckle from Lucky.

"Looks like it smarts." He commented.

"You have no idea." I answered.

"Well, I just hope you'll be able to keep up tonight. It's the weekend so we're bound to be busy." Lucky remarked.

"I got this." I answered waving off his concern.

Who was I kidding? After about an hour into my shift my head felt dizzy. I kept confusing simple orders like Liquid Heroine with The Three Wise Men. I was flustered to say the least. By the time 11 pm had rolled around I had finally urged my dizzy spells away and started to completely focus my attention on the job.

"Can I have four shots of Jameson?" I heard a familiar voice ask from behind me.

I was currently making a Margarita with a lemon twist, so my back was facing the counter. I turned around and realized it was Tony, the guy I had met last night, or more like early this morning.

"Hey." I greeted with a warm smile.

"Effie." Tony said with a wide smile stretching across his face.

We continued to look at each other, smiling and unsure what to say next.

I cleared my throat before saying "So you wanted 4 shots of Jameson right?"

"Yeah, thanks." Tony replied with a flustered look on his face. I quickly grabbed the bottle of Jameson and poured four shots, all the while putting on a show. I took my job serious enough that I made it entertaining enough to twirl the bottles in the air when I poured out the shots.

"What is this, Coyote Ugly?" Tony asked in a joking manner.

"Nope, this is four shots of Jameson." I answered sarcastically before saying "That'll be 28 even."

"Are you kidding me?" He asked with an incredulous expression.

I shrugged before saying "I don't make the prices, just the drinks."

Tony rolled his eyes before extracting his wallet and handing over $28.

"Maybe I'll see you around?" He asked with a hopeful expression.

"Yeah, maybe." I answered politely before moving down the line of our growing customers.

The night flew by in a hurry. I was slammed with orders, that is until 3:00 rolled around. The bar had finally died down. The only people left were a few groups of obliterated girls and Tony along with his three friends. Every now and then Tony would glance at me, showing off his toothy grin before continuing to talk to his friends. I was ultimately glad for the fact that my side swept bangs covered the bulging bruise on my forehead.

"This is the tips you earned for the night." Lucky said while handing over a stack if money.

"Thanks." I replied gratefully.

"No problem, you earned it." Lucky commented. "Now go home and rest off that bump of yours." He instructed while wiping down the bar top.

I smiled at him before grabbing my bag and jacket from beneath the counter. I shrugged it on then made my way outside. The cool night air swirled around me as I began to walk my usual route in the dark.

"Effie!" I heard someone shout from behind me.

I turned around to find Tony walking fast to catch up with me. I felt my lips turn up into a small smile.

"Hey Tony." I replied as he finally reached me.

"I was gonna head to the diner soon and I was wondering if you wanted to join me." He replied with a wide smile gracing his lips.

I looked back at him with uncertainty, chewing my bottom lip and debating my next move.
