Fast Times at Clairemont High

Thirty Four

"Ow, that stings." Audrey winced as I applied the cleaning solution to her cuts.

"That's the last one!" I said, sealing it with a bandage. Audrey was very pale.

"Uh, I don't feel to good..." She said faintly. Before I knew it she was passed out in my arms.

"Tony, you need to come to my house, like now." I said frantically when Tony picked up.

"Okay, Lyric is coming too. What's wrong?" He asked, his voice showing a hint of concern.

"Just...hurry." I said, getting choked up.

--

About five minutes later Lyric and Tony sped up in the car. I was still crying, worried about my sister. Her heartbeat was steady, but I was still scared.

"Oh my god!" Tony said as he saw Audrey. He ran over to her and picked her up.

"Wake up. Wake up. Wake up." He whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead.

"She was beat up by a bunch of girls at school. I was cleaning her last cut when she passed out." I said shakily. The tears streaming down my face were slowing; I always cried if something was wrong with Aud. She was my sunshine.

"You...smell...good." A muffled voice said groggily. I looked up and blinked tears out of my bleary eyes. Audrey was awake.

"That was weird. I could hear you guys, but I couldn't wake up. Maybe it's got something to do will my happy medicine?" She said. She had a habit of calling her depression meds 'happy medicine.' It made her feel less crazy, she claimed.

"Audrey Lynette Mitchels! If you ever do that again I will kill you!" I scolded, even though I knew she couldn't control it.

"Sweetie, who hurt you?" Lyric said, stepping in. She kneeled down, took Audrey's hand and look into her eyes.

"She was a grade eight; much bigger than me. She had a big group of girls with her, and like, two guys. They eat me up without an explanation and then ran off." Audrey explained.

"The main girl was named Roxanna I think; that's what I heard anyway. But, whatever, I'm better now." She said.

"No, you aren't better until you reach those bitches a lesson." Lyric stated. Audrey laughed at her use of profanity. It always made Audrey laugh.

"Lyric, language! There are children here!" Tony said. I remembered that I had technically skipped school, and that I would never hear the end of it from my father. I rolled my eyes as we got into the car.

--

It was about a ten minute drive to her school. We walked into the office, a rush of cool air settling over us. I walked up to a secretary. Her nameplate said Mrs. Fran Julipe.

"Hi, misses. I was wondering if the principal was available to talk?" I asked. The lady looked up from her computer.

"Do you have an appointment." The woman said, monotone. Jesus, she was like a robot.

"No, but it's really important." I said. The woman deadpanned me.

"Are you eighteen or older." The woman enquired in the same tone.

"Just let us speak to the goddamn principal!" Tony exploded. The woman looked fearful and pointed to a door. We walked in.

"Hi." The man who said this was dressed in a nice suit with slicked back grey hair. I assumed he was Principal Drew.

"hi, may we speak?" I asked. The man nodded.

--

After I had told him everything, he looked at me strangely.

"Happy medicine?" He asked. I nodded.

"Audrey has depression. She calls it her happy medicine." I said. He nodded thoughtfully. He picked up the telephone sitting on his desk and talking into it.

"Brenda, please get me Roxanna Myers from grade eight." He requested. The call was returned by a young female voice.

"Will do, Peter!" The bubbly voice replied. In a matter of minutes, Roxanna came into the room. The principal left so we could speak privately.

"Get that girl away from me!" The girl squirmed. "She beat me up!"

Roxanna was a lanky blonde girl, who had a freckled face and blue eyes. In other words, just another annoying blonde bitch.

"She's the one with cuts and bruises, not you." Lyric said.

"Yeah, because I kicked her faggot ass." The blonde boasted.

"Don't you ever say that again." Tony warned. The girl blushed.

"You're cute. Come be with me instead of that fag." She said. Audrey scoffed.

"He's cute?" Audrey said. She turned and gave him a kiss on the lips. The girls mouth dropped open.

"I'm gonna kill you, you stupid Emo fag. I will get my sister, Madeline, too!" She shouted as she stomped out.

"What. Was. That." I said, looking at Audrey. She blushed profusely and smiled.
