A Castle By the Sea

Rubio's

Pouting, she snatched the can and opened it, making a few more pieces of clothing fall off her body. She took a huge gulp and then turned so she was facing me.
“Spot any cutes boy here?” She teased, nudging my shoulder with hers.

“Oh god,” I laughed, blushing a bit.

“You have!” Michelle cheered, taking another sip. “Tell me about this mystery man.”

“Well, he's tan,” I started, earning her to laugh.

“You just described every guy in California.”

I laughed in reply, “Yay, I guess you’re right. It’s just, the boys where I’m from are never this good looking or tan!”

“Well what was his name, don’t hold out on me now!” Michelle giggled.

“Dylan, I met him at the beach.”

Michelle sat up suddenly, “You went to beach already, was it nice?”

“You haven’t been to the beach yet? Are you not from the area?” I asked in surprise.

“No, actually I’m from Idaho. I’ve actually never been to the beach before.”

I started to feel a bit of guilty creep up on me, I should have waited for her.

“Idaho, huh? That’s nice. Hey, I’m starving, have you eaten yet?”

“Nope! Let’s go to Rubio’s, I heard it was pretty good,” she then paused to smirk at me, “and maybe we will run into some more cute boys!”

We slipped on some shoes and grabbed our student IDs before we locked our room and made our way upstairs to the lobby.

“Look Sara! They are having a hall meeting later on today.” Michelle gestured at an obviously hand made poster that contained the information for the town meeting.

“We better hurry and go eat so we don’t get miss the meeting.” I advised as we turned to make our way out of the hall.

Michelle was giggling and running ahead of me, not really seeming to pay attention to where she was heading.

“Do you even know where you are going?” I laughed.

“Nope, we are going on an adventure!”

Her words, the very words I had thought this morning, made my chest squeeze. It made me realize that it really was. I had no idea where anything is and I had no one except the room mate that I just met.

Hopefully I won’t have any of the same problems that used to bother me back home.

I watched as Michelle continued to bounce around in excitement, giggling at my boisterous roomie.

Although, my laughter quickly stopped when Michelle bounced into a person passing by.

The stranger only stumbled back a few steps, otherwise unharmed. Michelle on the other hand fell back and landed smack on her butt.

I quickly ran over to my startled, fallen room mate. I reached down to help her up.

“Oh my goodness, I am so sorry,” Michelle quickly mumbled to the stranger.

“Why don’t you watch where the fuck you’re going, jesus fucking christ.” An angry girlish voice replied.

In my haste to help Michelle up, I had all but forgotten the person Michelle had run into, but the startlingly harsh reply surprised me so much that my head jerked up to see the culprit.

The girlish voice belong to a girl that was maybe a little bit shorter than me, but upon further inspection I realized that she was wearing the huge wedged sandals. The girl was obviously very girly and preppy with her tiny white short shorts and her blue halter top. She had bitch written all over her.

Usually, I would try to quickly defuse the situation and try to get away as fast as possible with as little confrontation as possible.

But this girl’s ridiculous attitude bothered me. I refuse to let myself be that girl that didn’t stick up for her friend. This was another change I promised myself I would stick to.

“Hey, you need to calm down. It was an accident,” I replied with a hint of anger.

“No no, Sara. She’s right. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going,” Michelle pipped in embarrassed.

“So, that doesn’t mean she can be a bit-”

The girl then interrupted me, “Whatever you freaks, I don’t have time for this. You just better watch yourself.” She shot one last ugly look at us before strutting away in a manner that all bitches seemed to perfect.

“You shouldn’t let people treat you like that,” I told Michelle, “Are you okay?” I reached out, placing my hand on her shoulder.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just don’t like confrontation,” Michelle replied meekly, looking down allowing her bangs to fall in front of her face.

I usually didn’t either, I can’t believe I actually stood up to that girl. It was just so unlike me. Maybe I could change.

“Don’t worry about her, it’s a huge campus. The chances of us running into her again are minimal.” I reassured my room mate.

Or at least I hope so, I thought to myself as we started to walk again more slowly this time, looking for the dining hall.
