A Castle By the Sea

Pacific Beach

Yesterday, I was dropped off in my dorm room, ready to start my first year at San Diego State University. I am now a resident of Toltec House for Undeclared Majors.

Being that I had come from out of state, I was welcomed by an empty room that luckily already contained all the boxes that my belongings had thankfully already arrived in.

I know that I have a room mate that is supposed to arrive some time today, and I have no idea what to expect. At first I was going to wait for her to arrive so that we could go exploring together, but I have no idea when she is supposed to get here. So I just decided that I would go on with out her.

After filling out the proper paperwork, I was given three keys. A key to my room, a key to the closet in my dorm, and a key to the mailbox I would be sharing with my room mate.

I changed into a hoodies and shorts and slipped on my pair of vans before I headed out. Locking my door behind me, I left the dorm.

It was gorgeous here in San Diego, as compared to the town I came from. The skies were a beautiful deep shade of blue and there was a nice breeze.

As I walked around the corner from my dorm, I saw that there was a bus stop for students.

Right then and there I made a decision. Back home, I was ordinary Sara. I never did anything fun or exciting and now was my chance to change. I was in a new city, a new state and it was time to step out of my comfort zone. Now was the chance to reinvent myself.

Looking at the bus stop, I saw my first chance. I decided to get on the first bus that arrived, no matter the destination, and see what I would find.

As I entered the little shelter a bus started to pull in. There was a little electronic sign on the front and back of the bus that read “Pacific Beach”.

I had read in the Housing brochure that the ocean was only 8 miles away. The thought of the beach being so close was exciting to me.

I quickly got on the bus and took a seat by the window. After a couple other people got on, the bus peeled away from the corner.

I watched as we passed all the groups of students and their parents all hustling to move into their new dorms, lugging boxes and refrigerators.

As we got closer to the beach, the view faded into colorful shops. Instead of fridges and boxes, people were lugging surf boards and beach chairs.

The bus pulled into another bus shelter and I started to make my way off.

I was amazed to find that the stop had brought me literally to the coast, Only mere yards in front of me, the pacific ocean crashed into sand before it retreated back into the sea.

Along the coast was a board walk that had multiple little tourist type shops that sold thing like hoodies and t-shirts. There were many little outdoor bars and clubs, as well as a couple restaurants and hotels.

Realizing that I had not brought any sunglasses with me, I headed to one of the shops hoping to find pair.

Luckily, the shop had a pretty impressive variety of glasses, all sporting ‘Pacific Beach’ on the sides.

I paid for a pair of simple blue pair that looked like ray bans and headed out.

Walking down the board walk I passed the most diverse groups of people I had ever encountered.

There were couples strolling hand in hand. People on bikes. There were people dancing to the music coming out of the nearby clubs, drawing crowds of people who’s attention they had caught.

I stopped to watch a man who was break dancing to some hip-hop song that I didn’t know. It amazed me that people just came out here and put on a little show. You never saw things like this where I came from.

A man seemed to randomly come from the watching crowd and started to dance with the first man. Before long they were competing in a little dance battle.

I was completely immersed in the spectacle that was going on before me that I didn’t even realize what was going on around me.

My attention was only caught when I heard the frantic yell behind me.

“Hey!! Look out!!”
