Drella Here

When It's Sudden Death We Fight Back

I buried my hands deep in my pockets. I looked over at the house and sighed. I hate it here. It reminds me of all the arguments. Maybe that's why I didn't like staying in the house much in my senior year. I was always in Vic's bedroom. In a way I miss that though.
I walked to the door and took a deep breath. I went to knock but the door was unlocked. I frowned and walked inside. I went into the sitting room and found no one. I went through into the kitchen and stopped. On the floor sprawled out I saw my mom. She was lying face down. I rushed over to her and rolled her over. "Mom?" I asked gently. I started to shake her. She wasn't waking up. I felt myself start to panic. "Mom?!" I asked louder. "Mom!" I yelled. Her eyes were glassy. I checked her pulse and stilled. "Shit," I mumbled. There was none. She was gone . . . Dead. I stood up and my hand came up to cover my mouth. I started to back away. My back hit the kitchen table. I started crying a little. I couldn't stop it.
"What are you doing?" someone asked. I jumped and turned around. I saw a man and woman in the doorway. They both lived next door I think.
"I'm Drella," I managed to get out.
"Oh, Drella," she sighed heavily.
"Why don't you come away from there?" the man suggested. I nodded and walked into the sitting room. I sat down and held my head in my hands.
"Who're you?" I asked flatly.
"My name is Charlie, and my husband is David. We've been taking care of your mother this past year," she explained.
"Did you . . . Did you find her?"
"We did," David nodded.
"Well, this is a merry Christmas," I said into my hands. I felt someone pat my back and saw Charlie. I stood up and turned my back to them. "I didn't let my own mother touch me, so I'll hardly let you," I said quickly.
I heard a knock and looked into the hall. Charlie hurried of and I sat on the floor. I was hugging my body tightly. It was taking everything I had not to run away right now. I saw some paramedics hurry in. I sat motionless as from a distance I watched them around Mom. They were checking her until one finally started writing something down. She was zipped away into a black bag. I looked down, I couldn't look any longer.
"Excuse me?" someone asked. I looked up and frowned. I saw one of the paramedics.
"What?" I asked bluntly.
"Are you Drella Young?"
"I am," I nodded.
"And you're the daughter of the deceased?"
"Please use her name," I begged.
"Of course,"
"But I am,"
"Would you be able to accompany me to the hospital? There's some matters that need to he taken care of,"
"Like?" I urged.
"Your mother had a disease of the blood. It is passed through the family. Meaning you may have it. We need to take a blood test," he explained.
"Okay," I nodded. I couldn't say much more. I stood up and started following him. My body was moving numbly. We walked outside and towards the ambulance. I was sat in the front and and they started driving.
The worst thing about this is that I still don't forgive her. She hurt me so bad. She wasn't there. She drove me to climb trees and endanger myself from the age of six. I can't just forget about that because she's dead. She could have tried to mend things. But she didn't. How can I look last that?
I saw we were at the hospital. I was taken out and inside. They led me along a corridor and to a waiting room. Someone came to collect me and I was taken into a room.
"Are you nervous?" the nurse asked.
"No," I replied flatly. She got me ready and got the needle. It went into my arm and I gasped. She took some of my blood and put a plaster on my arm. "Do I have the same disease?" I asked.
"We won't know until the results come back,"
"When's that?"
"Two days," she smiled. I stood up and held my head. "I'm sorry for your loss," she added.
"Whatever," I muttered as I walked out. "Of course you are," I walked out of the hospital and leant against the wall outside. I got out my phone and called Vic.
"Hey," Vic said warmly.
"Can you come and get me?" I asked. My voice broke. This is the most I've spoken since the house.
"Ella, what's wrong?"
"I don't want to talk about it now. Please, I need you," I rushed.
"Where are you?"
"At the hospital,"
"What?! Why?!"
"I had some stuff to do,"
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," I reassured.
"Good. I'll be ten minutes," he said.
"Vic?" I asked before he hung up.
"Yeah?"
"I love you," I said.
"I love you too, Ella," he said and hung up. I sighed and dropped to the floor. My head was in my hands and I glared at the floor.
I didn't know how long I was like that. I heard the honk of a horn and saw Vic in his car. I stood up and ran over to him. I got inside the car and looked at Vic. He was looking at me cautiously. "What's this?" I asked and gestured to the small velvet box on the dashboard.
"Nothing," Vic rushed and grabbed the box, putting it in his pocket, "What happened?" he asked. I threw my arms around him and Vic pulled me to him. "Tell me," he urged and kissed my hair.
"I went to see my mom,"
"How'd it go?"
"It could have gone better, considering I walked in and found her dead body," I said monotone.
"Ella, fuck. I'm sorry," he said.
Vic held me close to him and we just sat there. We didn't have to do much else. Vic didn't have to do much else. Death is such a grim, strange thing. Was I sad? I don't know. Was I angry? Fucking hell yes. I don't know how I feel. Vic couldn't say anything. He knows that and he saves me the bullshit. That's why I love him. He's just holding me close, I need that.

Notes

Hey! Once again writing from my sofa of pain. This morning alone I've told my parents I have the plague, Spanish influenza and swine flu. I may be lying, but I do feel like shit. Anyway, how was this? Was you expecting this? What will happen? Does Drella have the same illness? :)
