• Emilia's pov •




He stood there, waiting patiently for me to reply. The words just wouldn't come out of my mouth. My throat was completely dry. I tried swallowing, but not a drop of spit was in my mouth.

I thought about calling Mandy and asking if she can take care of this, but I knew she couldn't even stand up from that table. So, instead I tried to think of an excuse, but I just couldn't. All the memories of us started to come back. Especially the one I dreaded the most. The first time we met.


It was a warm day in San Diego. I thought I'd go for a walk just to clear my mind from all my worries. Walks were always the way to go with me. Just the thought of wind blowing in my face makes me excited and filled with joy.

North Wood Park was the best park to just sit down on a bench and think. Ever since I was a kid it was my favourite. It must have been because the trees were always so full, so pretty. I use to sit under them and read a book. Most probably a Sarah Dessen book. She was my favourite author as a kid.

But the this one time I went, a strange boy sat beside me when I was only twenty. He seemed like the mean and hurtful type just because of his tattoos and snake bites. But I knew just by the way he'd stare off into the distance, that he was exactly the opposite.

"I'm Tony," he said, turning his head to me and holding out his hand for me to shake.

I shook his hand, half-smiling. "Halley." When he released my hand, I turned back to staring at the breath taking view of the trees. I couldn't understand why he was trying to make conversation. 'You should never talk to strangers,' as my mother always scolded me.

"Beautiful trees, huh?" I turned to him, waiting for him to say more. "I use to come here and just stare at them all day. They were -- and still are -- that pretty."

And just by that sentence, I knew we had a lot in common. Later on, I really did know we had a lot in common, because we talked for hours and there wasn't one awkward silence. Only laughter or chatter. He made me feel like I was actually wanted and loved. Tony was special and different. I liked that about him.


"Emilia, is everything okay out there?!" Mandy asked from the back room.

I cringed from her sudden loud voice. "Uh, yeah!" I replied. I cleared my throat, snapping out of the trance I was in for god knows how long, and tried avoiding Tony's eyes. "Sorry about that, sir, what was that you wanted?" I picked back up my pen, ready to right down what he wanted. I noticed my hand shaking, so I put my other hand over it.

"Yeah, I was just wondering if you have any strong guitar picks? Mine keep on breaking, consta--"

Tony got interrupted by Mandy walking in, whilst groaning like a zombie. "Are you sure you're fine out here? You sound nervous, like somebo--" she stopped when she saw Tony standing in front of the counter.

I turned around to give her a sad face of mine. It's used a lot if you ask me. Mandy closed her eyes and sighed. She opened her eyes again and started walking towards me. "Back room, now," she whispered into my ear so Tony couldn't hear.

I nodded and gripped my pen into my right hand, fast-walking towards the back room. "Oh, I'm sorry, Emilia just had something to do, but how can I help you?" I heard Mandy ask in a fake happy voice. She knew everything. From our first date to the break up.

I sat on the exact same table as Mandy was lying on just moments earlier and cried. Cried, because he forgot me. Cried, because I was useless. Cried, because I was just a guitar sales women to him. Cried, because I still love him and always will.
