Tony and Mike had been dating for two years and to Mike; that was a record because he never even lasted for 2 months. Meanwhile, Tony thought that was normal as Tony was the type of guy who was usually in a long term relationship.

Mike was very certain that Tony was the one. After all, Mike was 28 now and he was done screwing around and the only person he wanted now and forever was Tony. So he had made up his mind and decided to propose to Tony.

But however, it didn’t end up like how he thought it would be.

When he invited Tony for dinner at a fancy restaurant – Tony thought it was just a normal date. Tony actually just wore a shirt and pants while Mike was all dressed up with a tie. Tony was confused at the sudden change of appearance of Mike, but that was just Mike.

They ate, chatted and Mike was desperately trying to find the right moment to ask him. He was sweating and he was just responding by laughing nervously at whatever Tony was saying. Tony, however, didn’t notice that his boyfriend was sweating as he was enjoying the food.
It was rare for them to go out to fancy restaurants and Tony absolutely loved it.

They finally stopped talking for a while and when Mike was about to say it, he just ended up talking rubbish.

“Tone,” he called, causing Tony to look up to him and the younger’s eyes just made him nervous as fuck. He gulped and then said, “Do you think that I should buy new drum kit?”
And then they began to talk about drums and stuff but there was only one thing inside Mike’s mind – DO IT, NOW.

But he can’t.

At one point, he excused himself to the toilet and practiced talking to the mirror, pretending that he was going to propose while trying various ways on how to propose. Should he go for the chill type? Or should he joke first before proposing? Or maybe, he should kneel down in front of everybody just to show his love for Tony?

“Will you marry me?” Mike practiced in front of the mirror, while observing the way he look while asking.

Unfortunately for him, a man came inside the toilet and was utterly surprised to find a tall man wanting to marry himself while staring at the mirror. Mike turned to the man, while frantically trying to explain that he was just practicing and he wasn’t a lunatic but he just walked out of the toilet and sat on his seat.

As soon as he sat down, Tony began to talk again. Usually, Mike was the one who did the talking but this time, he was too nervous to talk.

“T – Tony,” he stuttered. Finally, he was going to speak. “I, I… I love y-you.”

“Love you too, Mikey,” Tony answered.

“No!” he suddenly snapped. Then he realized he was overreacting so he shook his head and then lower down his voice, “I m-mean. I really, really, really, really love you.” To which, Tony only nodded as he cocked his eyebrow. “I want to spend my life with you, starting from today.”

Puzzled, Tony softly chuckled, “What are you talking about, Mikey?”

“Ugh, fuck!” Mike groaned in frustration and finally, he stared at Tony with a serious look on his face, his worries all gone. “I love you so much. I want you to be my husband and well, will you marry me, Tony?”

Tony was too surprised for words.

He only blinked.

Sure, Tony really loves Mike. But they’ve only been together for two years and that wasn’t very convincing for Tony. They do have a lot of arguments but Tony was scared. He hadn’t thought about marriage life with Mike and that was what he was scared the most. What if he couldn’t handle Mike?

“Tony?” Mike’s soft voice managed to drag Tony’s head back down to earth.

Biting his lower inner lip, Tony began to debate with himself. If he said yes now, he might regret it. But if he said no now, he might regret it too. At last, after thinking for some time, he had decided to tell Mike what he really wanted.

Slowly, Tony’s hand held on Mike’s. Mike was starting to get worried, what if Tony rejected him? What if Tony wanted to break up this instant? But his worries had ceased when Tony’s thumb slowly stroking his hand.

“Mike,” Tony let out a sigh, “I love you. I really do. But – but I think it’s not time yet. I, I still need to wait. Just give me time, okay? I’m not ready.”

Only God knows how heartbroken Mike felt. Mike’s face showed that he was disappointed and sad and upset. Mike forced a smile and then said, “That’s okay, I understand.” While he actually kept on convincing himself that Tony does still love him but all they need is time.

Their ride home was quiet. None of them dare to spoke.

2nd April, 2013 – Mike will remember the date he got rejected forever.


It took them a week to not get awkward around each other after what had happened. Mike had been locking himself in his bedroom and Tony felt super guilty.

But thank goodness, Vic managed to make them talk again.

Mike decided that maybe he could wait. So he waited. But Tony never bring it up. Mike wanted to ask him, but he was too scared that Tony would think of him being impatient and that was the last thing he wanted Tony to think about him that way.

One night, Mike was alone at the apartment. He didn’t know where Vic and Jaime were but he did know that Tony was at the studio, working on his guitar. It wasn’t that Mike was afraid being alone at night but he just felt that the three of them weren’t at the apartment at the same time.
All of a sudden, the doorbell rang.

Mike lazily went to the door to open it, maybe it was a mailman. All the four of them had their own keys to the apartment so he didn’t expect to see Tony standing in front of the door as Mike opened it with Jaime holding a guitar behind him with Vic.

Bewildered, Mike raised his eyebrow but soon enough, his eyes widened as Tony knelt down on the ground, with a box on his hand, and Jaime started to pluck the strings of the guitar while Vic singing slowly.

“I know that I’ve refused to marry you exactly last year and I thought that I would give it another year and I was glad that we’re still together. I do love you, Mike Fuentes and I’m sorry that I doubted you. Will you marry me?” Tony said as he opened the box, revealing a ring.

Mike couldn’t help it, his lips immediately curved into a smile. “Of course, silly! How could I say no?”

Tony grinned as he stood up, only to be hugged tightly by Mike. The romantic mood was ruined by Jaime’s huge laughter because he found the situation to be funny. Tony put the ring on Mike’s finger and Mike noticed Tony had worn his.

Mike laughed and then slowly pulled Tony for a kiss.

At the background, Vic mumbled, “And now my brother’s going to get married first before me.”
