Only The Good Die Young

Chapter Twenty-three

Tony finally sobbed himself to sleep in a half an hour or so. He hadn't so much as heard his aunt anywhere in the house during that time. He was glad. If he had his choice he'd never look at her again. He wasn't sure how long he was asleep, but when his aunt shook him awake it was still daylight out, so it couldn't have been that late.

"Hey, Tony," she says softly, offering a smile.

Tony grumbles and angry response.

"I know you're mad at me, but we still have to go school clothes shopping. You'll thank me for this later." Tony sighs, but crawls out of bed. His face was tear stained and his eyes red from crying, but he didn't bother doing anything about it. There was no reason he shouldn't go into public looking like shit. Tony spends to car ride to the city in utter silence, he had nothing to say to his aunt.

When they do reach the city, Tony feels sad all over again. He saw Vic's apartment building right off the main street and remembered how Mike had insisted he meet Vic before they were even officially dating. When they passed a Super 1 Tony remembered a time Mike had brought him along to do some shopping. He feels a tear run down his cheek, but he wipes it away. He didn't need to cry right now.

"So, did you do anything fun this summer beside . . . you know . . . ?" His aunt attempts to make conversation. In vain Tony might add.

"No," Tony answers bluntly, praying that they could just get to Walmart soon. Finally they pull into the parking lot, and Tony is glad to pile out of the cramped car. He honestly felt rather motion sick.

"Oh . . ." His aunt quiets herself again as they walk to the store. "Are you at least excited for school?"

"Not really." That was not a lie. If anything, Tony wished he never had to go back to school. He wanted this summer (or at least the earlier part of the summer) to last forever, however cheesy that might sound.

"Oh, that's a shame. I remember when you used to light up at the sound of school," his aunt reminisces.

Tony shrugs. He really didn't want to go back to school. Especially with the fact this was his last year and he'd suddenly have to deal with officially knowing what college he was going to and getting as many scholarships as he can. It was stressful just to think about
.
They get a cart and walk down the school supplies aisle. Tony wordlessly throws his needed supplies into the cart before starting off toward the clothing aisle. He knew his sizes well, so he simply grabbed a few nice looking shirts, some pants, and underwear, tossing them in the cart with the school supplies. He didn't even bother to pay attention to his aunt as she babbled about how he should really try on his clothes. He wanted to go home and die, not spend another minute here in public. At least he could cry in peace at home.

Tony glances down the hair soap aisle and remembers that he's out of soap and razors. He walks down the aisle and picks out said items putting them in the cart. When's he's finally sure he has everything he needs to how to be ready for school he turns to his aunt and announces in a monotone voice, "We can leave now."

"Don't you wanna look around? Buy a new CD?" His aunt asks, her tone exasperated. When Tony shakes his head she lets out a sigh. "We'll continue this discussion in the car."

Tony simply huffs and follows her to the check out line. They return to the car and put the bags in the trunk and push the cart into to designated area. Finally they're back into the care.
"Listen, Tony," his aunt say, looking at his with hopeful eyes. "I know you're mad at me now. Your grandma and grandpa did this to me when I was your age. Mitchel Warner, he's in prison now, and I resented them at the time, but I thank them now. They literally stopped me from throwing my life away. Just trust me, Mike Fuentes is your Mitchel Warner."

Tony snorts. "Mike's different from Mitchel Warner. Mitchel Warner was a freaking child rapist, sociopath. Mike is a loving, caring boy, that just so happened to have dropped out. It's not a big deal!"

"Tony Perry!" His aunt snaps. "You may not believe me now, but he's trouble. And as your guardian I don't want you seeing him. Do you hear me?!"

"I hear you, and I know you're wrong." Tony crosses his arms across his chest and frowns. "Just-Just, let's go home."
