Break the Barricade

Vic

As soon as I opened the door I heard small sobbing coming from the corner of the room. My heart sunk into my shoes as I looked left and saw Thea curled up on the floor. She was holding her legs desperately with her hands and she had her face buried between her knees. It was horrible to see her like that.
I hate to admit it, but at the same time I was afraid. Not just of what her and what she could do, but also of what would happen to us and to our lives. I was finally happy and I was so afraid to lose that, no matter how selfish that sounds. I didn’t want to lose Thea or the way things were. But I knew I would and that was what I was afraid of.
She didn’t notice me when I slowly walked towards her. I kneeled down next to her and slowly wrapped my arms around her. I felt her stiffen in my arms but when she noticed it was me she relaxed slightly again. Then suddenly her sobs turned into cries.
“Shh,” I tried soothing her. “It’s okay. It’ll be okay,” I added, even though I didn’t believe it myself. How could things be okay? Everything was fucked up.
“It won’t be okay!” she suddenly screamed. Her cries became louder and she pressed her face in the fabric of my shirt. I rubbed her back, trying to calm her down.
“I’m so sorry,” she cried. “I’m so, so sorry.”
“I know,” I mumbled. I didn’t know what else to say.
We just sat there like that for a while. Every once in a while she would tell me how sorry she was, followed by hysterical sobs. After a while I thought she was never going to calm down, but eventually she did.
I think the guys had been hearing everything, because a few minutes after she calmed down they came in. They just stood there in the doorway, like they weren’t sure what to do. Thea looked like she was afraid of what they’d say. Like they’d abandon her. But they wouldn’t. I knew they wouldn’t.
“Hey,” Jaime said, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck. “Do you guys mind coming back to the bus? We’ll talk about it there.”
Thea silently nodded and I took her hand. We walked towards the bus. I had my arm wrapped around her and I rubbed her arm each time I felt her trembling. We were all so silent, it almost seemed like someone died. But then reality hit me and I realized someone could’ve died today. A shiver ran down my spine.
We went into the van and we all sat there in the front lounge. Thea sat next to me on the couch and I kept close to her, hoping my presence would keep her calm. If I was afraid of what was going to happen, then how would she feel? I had to make sure she was okay.
Finally Thea’s croaked voice broke the silence. “What’s going to happen now? What happened to the woman?” she asked softly, fear obvious in her voice.
Jaime bit his lip. “Jack and Alex went with her to the hospital. She’s injured, but she will be okay. I don’t think you did any permanent damage.”
Thea nodded slowly. “But what will happen?” Her eyes started tearing up again. “Will I go to jail now?”
“Hopefully not.” Jaime thought for a second, contemplating on what to say. “I will go to the hospital for you and try to sort it. We don’t want you in jail either.”
“How?” Thea asked, voice still trembling.
“When she wakes up, I will make her an offer,” Jaime informed her. “Stop worrying about that though. You won’t go to jail. We won’t let you.”
Thea nodded. She seemed so fragile right now. So afraid. I could just hope Jaime was right. She couldn’t go to jail. She didn’t belong there.
“Jaime,” Mike nudged him. “Tell her now. You’re just making it harder.”
“Tell what?” Thea and I asked at the same time. They must’ve discussed things after I left.
Jaime breathed in slowly. “We think you have a problem,” he started.
I felt Thea tense up again and I held her even tighter. I was scared too. What were they going to say? I was a little angry too. They discussed things without me knowing and then they were telling us like we had no say in it. That was not fair, Thea and I were grown-ups too.
“There’s more, I know it,” Thea said. “Just say it.”
“Okay. You know that hospital you went to? The one that taught you how to control your anger?” he asked.
Thea nodded.
“We think you should go back.”
And like that I felt my world fall apart. I knew this was going to happen. I knew it. But if she had to go back to whatever place she went to back then I would lose her. And I don’t know if I could handle that.
“You can’t do that to me,” Thea said softly.
“You are right, we can’t,” Tony confirmed. It was the first time he said something tonight and that’s how I knew the next thing he was going to say was going to be important. “And we are not making you either. But you need the help, Thea. If you don’t do it for yourself, then do it for us. Do it for Vic. We want you okay. But there are things that we can’t fix. Sometimes you need external help. And we are asking you to seek it. If you don’t want to we can’t make you. But we hope you’ll do it for us.”
Thea sighed. “Okay.”

Notes
