Break the Barricade

Thea

I squinted through the sun, searching through the car lot for the huge black tour bus. I couldn't see anything past the sun, it was blinding me. It was always like this in San Diego, I should be used to it. But college a few states away has got me used to a little cold in the winter. Here we didn't even have a real winter. I shielded my eyes with my hand and saw it. The bus was huge and towered over me. I could see one guy outside, just by the door. He had a smoke in between his fingers and blew out a cloud. A smile tugged the corner of my lips as I went forward. I dragged my case with me.
When I stopped in front of the guy he looked up. I smiled at him and he dropped the butt down onto the floor before he stomped it out with his heel. "Can I help you?" the guy asked.
"Pierce The Veil?" I questioned. "If not I'm going to be so late,"
"That's us. I'm Mike," he smiled and offered me his hand.
"Thea," I replied. "Is Jaime there?"
"Jaime!" Mike called. I heard talking from inside the bus and the door opened. Jaime walked out and grinned at me.
"Thea!" he exclaimed. I laughed and went forward. Jaime hugged me and swung me around a little. I rolled my eyes and he set me down on my feet.
"Hey Jaime," I replied. "Still flat ironing your hair,"
"Come inside," he urged.
"Aren't you going to offer to carry my case?" I teased. He turned and looked at me blankly.
"No," Jaime shrugged. He went back inside and Mike helped me get my case inside. I walked into a front lounge and looked around. It was so modern compared to some of the buses I've looked at. I could see a small kitchen area and then a corridor lined with bunks, leading to the back lounge.
"So you met Mike. Let's go and meet the others," Jaime said. He took my hand and dragged me along to sit down. I sat on the couch and saw a guy sitting opposite me. He smiled a little and I waved.
"Tony," he told me.
"Thea," I smiled.
"Vic!" Jaime called. "Come and meet Thea!"
"Hey," someone said. He was walking over to us. The first thing I saw were his legs that were coming towards me. Then I looked up and smiled at his face. Very Mexican, with dark brown eyes and wavy dark hair coming down so it almost touched his shoulders.
"Hi, I'm Thea," I introduced myself.
"I'm Vic. Nice to meet you," he smiled.
"Go show her to her bunk," Jaime said.
"Sure," Vic nodded. I followed him with my case and he took me to the bunks. "Jaime said his baby cousin was here," he laughed.
"Not that much of a baby anymore, am I?"
"Not really," he shrugged. "You have the bunk above mine. Putting you on the bottom would be just cruel," he laughed.
"Thanks," I sighed and pushed my case into my bunk.
"How come you're with us? Jaime was a bit vague,"
"He tends to be," I laughed. "I've just graduated college," I explained.
"And you want a gap year?"
"Not really," I smiled. "I studied music tech. But if you have no experience then you have no job. I'm here to learn a few things. Maybe I'll be able to get a job then,"
"All I got off of Jaime was my baby cousin is coming with us, be nice to her,"
"Jaime really doesn't change," I replied.
"Thea!" Jaime called. I rolled my eyes and went back to the front lounge.
"Yes?" I asked.
"I need to talk to you,"
"I've been here five minutes. Don't tell me I'm in trouble already,"
"Come on," he said. Jaime took my hand and he took me to the back lounge. I saw a guitar and went over to it.
"Is this yours?" I asked, touching the neck.
"Vic's,"
"Oh," I shrugged and let go. "So what's up?"
"I wanted to talk about before,"
"What happened before?"
"What the doctor said,"
"That was ages ago," I sighed. "He said nothing,"
"Mum phoned me and said you're better,"
"I am. Sort of,"
"What does that mean?"
"That if someone pisses me off I won't be in a good mood. Everyone has that,"
"What if it happens? Like at that party a few years ago,"
"Why are you stressing? Calm down. If it happens then I deal," I shrugged. "Has my mum made you so this?"
"Sort of,"
"Of course," I said under my breath. "Chill. I'm fine. Can I just go and have a smoke before we leave?"
"You smoke?" he raised his eyebrows.
"For years. Catch up," I teased and playfully pushed him. Jaime laughed at me and I went back to where the others were. "Anyone got a lighter?" I asked.
"Here," Mike said. He got up and followed me out. We closed to door and sat down on the step of the bus. Mike lit it for me and and I smiled in thanks. "What did Jaime want?" Mike asked. I looked at him and exhaled a cloud before I replied.
"My mum is making him stress over stuff that happened years ago," I shrugged.
"Ahh . . . Family drama," he nodded.
"What about you?" I asked.
"What about me?"
"Any family drama that will take the focus off mine?"
"Um . . . Vic helped me piss last week when I got wasted,"
"Cousins?" I offered.
"Close. Brothers,"
"Really?" I widened my eyes. I leaned over to him and he bent down. "Then why is he so short?" I asked seriously.
"Bad luck?" Mike tried, smiling at me.
"Must be," I agreed. I crushed my smoke with my heel and went back inside. I looked at Mike and raised my eyebrows. "Coming?" I asked. He followed me on and I went and sat by Vic. There was a serious height difference between him and his brother. "Bad luck," I said to Mike, a smile tugging the corner of my lips.
