& The Reason Is You

Popcorn Guy, Cleaner And Walking Stick Man

Although I didn’t expect to meet him when he was wearing an apron (let alone when he was working – actually I didn’t expect him to work so it actually surprised me), I still felt glad that I came to the cinema and stumbled upon him.

Soon enough, I found myself standing beside him at the back of the theatre with him looking down at his shoes while I just stared at him. He was surprised to see me that he actually brought me here to not tell anyone, including his mother.

I was planning to tell her so that he would get back to school. I’ve missed him and not being with him for a few weeks actually made me feel lifeless. But what surprised me most was that he didn’t want me to tell his mother. Didn’t that mean his mother didn’t know he was working here? Why would he keep that from his mother – I mean, it wasn’t a bad thing to skip school because of work, right?

“Why?” I asked.

He could get a better job. He could work at the mall or something, where the salary and commission is higher but he took a job where I don’t think the salary is quite high and this place is fucking isolated.

“Because,” he began as he took out a cigarette and a lighter from his pocket, causing me to almost jump in surprise. I didn’t expect this to happen either. I didn’t know he smokes. I was too shocked that when he placed the cancer stick between his lips, I took it, broke it, threw it and stomp on it.

Mike just stared at me as I did that. I looked back up to him and then all of a sudden; I had this feeling to just yell at him. “You smoke? I didn’t know that. Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you work at a crappy place like this? Why have you been skipping school??” I felt just like I was my mother, asking him a lot of question.

He gave me a crooked smile and ruffled my hair, “Don’t be mad, Turtle. I’m doing this for a reason.”

I didn’t respond. He took out another cigarette, placed it between his lips and light it up. This time, I let him. He inhaled in and then exhaled, smoke coming out of his mouth. I didn’t really like smokers although my mom used to be one (yet she was the one who kept on telling me and Val to never do those kind of stuff.)

“What reason?” I asked, my voice stern. I wanted to know what was his reason to be stupid enough to skip school and made me wait for him every day. I wanted to know what was his reason to make me fell for him and the next day leave me without any explanation.
He inhaled again and then exhaled. “My mom and dad.”

I waited for him to continue. For the whole time he was talking, he didn’t look at me. He just stared at somewhere else while smoking. “My dad had troubles paying the bills for our house. And I’m doing all of this shit to help them. They don’t know though and I really don’t want them to know.”

He stopped smoking for a while and then continued, “My mom loves that house. But I don’t think we could save it, if you know what I mean. But I’m trying my best to at least help my dad.”
I felt guilty for being mad at him without knowing why he was doing all of this. I slowly nodded, finally understanding his situation.

“Do you have to work here?” I softly asked. “You could work somewhere else, you know. Somewhere with high income.”

“This isn’t a crappy place, Turtle. I’m doing this job to help my dad and also this cinema. I love this place.”

“So you’re working as a popcorn guy or something?” I asked.

He then finally turned to me, his breath felt warmer than the air, “Nah, I also do the cleaning in the toilet.”

And that explained why he was so good at cleaning the toilet at my first detention.

Even though I was supposed to be watching the Lion King alone, I’d rather help Mike with the popcorn. Like what they say, ‘two is better than one’, right? Why should I be alone when I finally have a friend that I could properly talk to?

Mike decided to go home early so I went with him. He didn’t drive here, he told me, Vic sent him. I remembered what Vivian had said about Michael and I finally understand that this was the other side of Mike that she usually sees. I actually felt happy that I was able to see this side of Mike because he just seemed so deep and sensitive.

I didn’t imagine that he would be the type of guy who actually loved his parents a lot but yeah, he did love them a lot. He just didn’t want them to know because he was shy.

I told Mike that I came here by bus. He said taking bus is boring so he said, “Why not we just walk? You know, I need to burn some fat in my body.”

To me, he was a walking stick man. I never thought he might have any fats in his body. He’s so fucking thin like a stickman. But walking means we’ll be slower which means we’d spent more time together so I agreed.

For the whole time, he was talking about his family and I actually enjoyed listening to him talk. Until he finally said, “What about you? How’s your mom?”

I didn’t have anything good to say about mom.

“Well, she’s a busy woman so I often spend time with her.”

“She seemed like a nice woman to me but uh.”

“Yeah,” I awkwardly answered, not caring that he wanted to continue his sentence.

We didn’t talk for a while, silence filled the air. He finally broke the silence and softly asked, “You’re not in a good term with her, aren’t you?”

“Well,” I let out a sigh and answered truthfully, “Yeah. She didn’t like me very much, I don’t know why though. Her favourite is Val. Always Val. Maybe she’s just anti-boys or something, ever since my dad left.”

“Why did your dad left?”

I didn’t answer. I didn’t want to. I felt uncomfortable at the subject so I remained quiet in hope that he would understand that it was a sensitive topic to me. I still remembered the night mom and dad got into an argument. Val was sleeping upstairs and I, unfortunately, was still awake and witnessed the whole scene.

Shrugging, I said, “Uh. So I came to your house. Don’t remember when though. I talked with your mom,” I was trying to change the subject. He looked at me, knew that I didn’t want to talk about it so he just went along.

“Really? What were you doing there?”

“Talking to your mom. She invited me in.”

He paused for a moment and then said, “But hey, why did you go to my house in the first place?”

“I thought you were sick so I decided to pay you a visit. Plus, I brought you notes and homework so you’d catch up with school.”

“Oh,” he said in a disappointed tone. “Thought you were missing me.”

Although I knew he was just teasing, I couldn’t help but blush because that was the real reason why I came to his house.
