Believe You Me

If you never break, you'll never know how to put yourself back together.

Vic’s surgery had been a complete success and he had gotten through it without any complications. A few days passed slowly and uneventfully, but before we knew it, it was the night before Vic was to be released from the hospital. Jaime was gathering his things together from up in my room to pack while I worked on packing Vic’s stuff up for him. The doorbell rang out, nearly drowned out by the music playing from my iPod. I looked up from the clothes I was folding, shocked to hear it go off.

“I got it!” I called out to Jaime, doubting that he could even hear me over his own iPod. I jogged down the stairs and peeked out the window next to it, unable to make out whose form it was standing in the darkness. I opened the door slowly, only to see that it was Austin standing on the other side. A shy smile grew on his face when he saw that it was me standing in front of him. When I didn’t say anything, he opened his mouth to speak.

“You haven’t been answering any calls or texts. I guess I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” He ran his hand through his spiked hair awkwardly and shifted his stance. I bit my lip and stepped outside, turning to check that Jaime wasn’t there before closing the door.

“Austin…” I started, but he placed a finger on my lips, shushing me.

“You don’t have to say anything, Evelyn. I know what’s happening, I’ve seen it before, and it’s okay. I knew we were never really going to be anything. I mean, I was kind of holding out hope that you might look at me the way you look at him, but I see the way he looks back at you. It’s okay, really, it is. He smiled softly at me and placed a hand gently on my cheek. “I might not love you like Jaime does, but I’ll always care about you. Please don’t ever forget that, okay?” He gave me a soft kiss on the cheek before placing something in my hand. “You left this at my house” He whispered in my ear before pulling away. “Goodbye, Evelyn.” He said and walked back to his car, not giving me a chance to say anything back to him. As he pulled out of the driveway, I looked down to see my necklace from Jaime pressed into my palm. The engraving on it shimmered in the lights from the street lamps and I could barely make out the words. I ran my finger over the engraving, closing my eyes and feeling the words that I had long since memorized.

Moonlight drowns out all but the brightest stars

I smiled, remembering reading my favourite Lord Of The Rings quote engraved when he first handed it to me, touched that he had remembered me telling him that, even over his own distaste for the series.

I turned inside and kicked the front door closed behind me before sprinting up the stairs to my room. I stopped outside the door, noticing that the loud music he had been playing earlier was now turned down into something soft. I pushed the door open slowly and saw Jaime sitting on the corner of my bed, jamming the last of his things into his suitcase. “You know, it’d be a lot easier to fit all your stuff in there in you actually folded your stuff.” I said, nearly making him jump.

"Oh, I didn’t hear you walk in." Jaime said and stood up. He walked over to me and placed his hand gently on my hips before leaning down and giving me a peck on the lips. "Was that the doorbell that I heard earlier, or was I just hearing things?" He asked after pulling away.

"Oh… No, nobody was at the door, you’re probably just hearing things. You’ve probably just been playing many concerts, you’re going to go deaf soon." I teased. He sat back down on the bed and held his arm open, waiting for me to crawl up next to him. I pulled my jeans off and slid a pair of shorts on before sliding up into the bed next to him. His hand snaked around my waist and pulled me tightly against him.

"Did you get all your stuff from your room packed too?" I asked while I absentmindedly scrolled through the channels on the television.

"Yes, mom. I also made my bed like the good little boy I am." He sassed at me with a smile.

"Hey, make fun of me all you want, but you and I both know how you get when it comes to packing!" I turned my attention towards the TV to see one of my all time favourite movies, Thor, had just came on. "Ahhhh!" I squealed, causing Jaime to groan. "I love this movie!"

"I’m starting to wonder if you actually love the movie, or just the fact that that Tom Hiddleston loser is in it." He murmured under his breath.

"Hey!" I said, smacking him gently on his chest. "Don’t you talk about my boyfriend like that!"

"Pfft, I don’t even see what’s so special about him." He said with an underlying jealous tone.
"He’s amazing, but nobody compares to you." I said and turned to him, pecking him gently on the cheek.

"Yeah yeah, that’s what they all say." He joked and returned my kiss. I snuggled back up against him and turned my attention back towards Tom Hiddleston on the TV screen.

We woke up early the next morning and got dressed rather quickly. Jaime packed all of our bags into our cars while I got the rest of Vic’s stuff packed up and set in my car. We’d decided earlier on that Vic would ride back with me and stay in Jaime’s room back at the loft until he was able to stay back at his house on his own. I shoved the last of Vic’s bags into my car and closed the trunk, finally ready to go get him from the hospital and drive back home.

Just as I closed the trunk, the front door opened and out walked Jaime and Tony. I walked over to them both and threw my arms around Tony, squeezing him tightly.

"You take care of him, Eve. And take care of yourself, too." Tony muffled into the top of my head. He gave me another squeeze before pulling back and smiling at me.

"Thanks, Tony. I’ll see you and Mike when you guys get back into town, right?" He nodded his head at me and I smiled and stepped back as Jaime wrapped his arm around my waist.

"You ready to go, babe?" He asked and when I nodded he let go of my waist. "Alright. We’ll see you later, man." Tony gave him a quick handshake and hug and padded back into the house. As soon as the door shut, I turned my attention back to Jaime.

"Are you going to the hospital, or are you just going to head back home?" I asked.

"I’m probably going to head on back and clean up my room for Vic and shit. Move some of my stuff up to your room, change the sheets, you know. Are you sure you want me staying in your room while he’s with us?" He reached his hand up and brushed a few strands of hair away from my face.

"Of course, it’s really no different than this past week that you’ve been sleeping with me. It’ll be fine, Hime." I flashed him a reassuring smile and gave him a quick peck on the lips. "I’ll see you at home. Drive safe, okay?"

"You’re one to talk, speed racer." He winked at me got into his car before I could say anything back, pulling out of the driveway and leaving me to stand there alone.
I got into my car a few minutes later and took off in the opposite direction that Jaime had went and headed towards the hospital. The ride was short and quick, and before I knew it I was pulling up to a waiting Vic outside of the hospital entrance. I could see his face light up when he saw my car pull up, and he all but hopped out of the wheelchair they had him sat in “for liability reasons.” I threw the car in park and jumped out to meet him, wrapping my arms around his frail body when I got close enough.

"Vic! Oh, Vic. You did it. You’re alive." I nearly sobbed into his shoulder.

"Calm down, Evie." He said tiredly. "Of course I’m alive. I’m not going anywhere anytime soon." He rubbed my back slowly while I wiped the tears out of my eyes. I pulled back from the embrace and looked into his eyes.

"You better not be." I took a breath and gathered myself before speaking again. "Is Mike not here?"

"No, he left once I said that you were on your way to pick me up." Vic said a little uncertainly.

"I see. In any case, let’s go home." I quickly reached for his hand and helped him into the passenger seat of the car before taking my place back at the driver’s seat. I left the hospital parking lot and headed for the highway, ready to leave behind Huntington Beach and everything that had happened here. Half an hour passed in silence, and it was so quiet that I had nearly forgotten Vic was in my passenger seat. When he spoke though, I nearly jumped out of my skin, not just because I had forgotten he was there, but also because he was asking the only question I was dreading to hear.

"So, what happened between you and Mike?"

Notes

I'm back again, with just as lame excuses! I have a full time job now and have had for the past few months, so that's why it's been so difficult for me to sit down and write. I'm going to write out a schedule for this though and start doing weekly updates until it ends, and I should be able to keep to that schedule! Thank you to everyone that's still subscribed to this, it honestly means the world to me. You really have no idea. I love you all, thanks for reading! As always, feedback is greatly appreciated, either on here or on my tumblr [jaimesfabass.tumblr.com]
