Believe You Me

And baby you'll be alright as long as I'm not

Mike arrived at the hospital first, storming in through the doors about twenty minutes after Tony had called him. He spotted Tony and rushed over to where we were sitting, his entire body trembling. Tony stood up at once and met him in the middle of the room.

"Where is he?" Mike stammered, out of breath.

"They rolled him back about half an hour ago, we haven't heard anything since." Tony explained calmly.

Jaime walked through the door moments later with worry plastered all over his face. I got up and ran over to him, throwing my arms around him and sobbing harder than I had all night.

"Shh, Evelyn, hush now..." He stroked my hair gently and walked us back over to the chairs. He sat down and I sat on his lap, still crying into his shoulder. "Evelyn, it's okay, doll. Everything is going to be okay." Jaime whispered into my ear over and over again. The tears stopped falling and I began to calm down. "What happened to him?" Jaime asked over my head to Tony, who was still standing with Mike.

"He swallowed a combination of pills... Evie found him right after he did." Tony explained to them both quietly. I saw Mike tense up and his hands ball into fists.

"No..... No. Are you fucking kidding me!" Mike shouted. He paced around a few steps before flipping over one of the chairs, attracting the attention of everyone in the waiting room. Tony walked over to Mike calmly and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Mike, acting like this isn't going to help any. We need to keep ourselves together, for Vic's sake."

Mike crashed into one of the chairs next to us and cupped his face in his hands, letting a few tears slide out. A few seconds later a nurse walked over to where we were sitting and we all shot up.

"Are you guys here with Mr. Fuentes?" She asked us. We all chorused a yes together.

"Well, I'm afraid we don't have all that much to report to you. We pumped his stomach, but for some reason his body still isn't returning to it's normal functions. We have him sedated in the Intensive Care Unit right now, but we won't know what the problem is for sure until we run some more tests. I suggest you all go home and get some rest. If anything happens, we'll be in touch. Is there a primary contact that we'll be able to reach?" Mike stepped forward and walked off to the side with the nurse to give her his information.

"I guess there's no reason for us to stick around. She's right, anyways, we should all head back to the house and get some rest. It's been a long day." Jaime said to Tony and I.

"Hime, will you take Eve back with you? I'm going to stop somewhere and clean the vomit out of the backseat." Tony asked Jaime quietly.

"Yeah, not a problem Tone. Come on, Eve. Let's go home." He wrapped his arm around my waist and led me out to the car. The ride back home was silent, and when we got there I headed upstairs immediately. I ran into my room and locked the door, flopping onto the bed and cried some more.

I laid there for hours, trying to will myself to fall asleep, but it was completely useless. I finally picked myself out of bed and let my feet lead me. A few moments later, I found myself standing outside of Jaime's door. I opened it slowly and walked in quietly, being sure to make the least amount of noise as possible. Jaime must have not been asleep though, because before I could even reach the bed, he was siting up rubbing his shirtless chest.

"Eve, what are you doing?" He muttered tiredly.

"I can't sleep, Hime.... Every time I close my eyes, all I see is Vic, looking up at me with those eyes...." I muffled a cry and covered my mouth with the sleeve of the hoodie I was wearing.

"Evelyn...." He said softly. "Come here, doll." He reached his arms out towards me and I ran over to him I crashed into his arms and pressed myself against him, crying into his chest for the hundredth time tonight.

"It's all my fault, Jaime, it's my fault. I should have seen it all, I should've recognized the signs... I could've prevented this." I cried out, trying to prevent another sob from escaping.

"Eve, baby, no. You can't put that on yourself. There's no way you could've known that he was going through something like that. No one is at blame here, Eve, and no one is blaming you one bit. It's sad to say, but things like this just happen sometimes without an explanation. There's nothing you could've done. You can't blame yourself." He rubbed my back softly as he cradled me against his chest.

"I just can't get his face out of my head, Jaime." I whispered softly.

"It's a rough thing we're all going through, especially you with being the one to find him, but you're stronger than this Eve. You're so strong. We'll get through this, and I'll be here with you every step of the way. Just close your eyes and listen to my voice. Everything is going to be okay." He lied down with me cuddled against him, still rubbing my back softly. He began to sing quietly into my ear, and my eyes began to droop. I focused on the sound of his voice, and soon found myself drifting off to sleep.

********

I woke up still in Jaime's arms, hearing hushed whispers in the room.

"The hospital called Mike and asked him to come up so we're getting ready to head out. Do you and Evie want to meet us there?" I heard Tony whisper.

"Yeah, I'll ask Eve when she gets up if she's up for it." Jaime whispered back. There were footsteps followed by a pause.

"Jaime..." Tony started hesitantly from the doorway. "You have to tell her, sooner or later." I felt Jaime sigh before answering back.

"I don't know that I'm going to, Tony. It'll probably be best if I don't." There was silence again, and when the door shut I knew Tony was gone. Jaime pressed his lips softly on my forehead, brushing the hair out of my face. "Evelyn, the hospital called Mike. Do you want to go meet him and Tony at the hospital?" He whispered into my ear softly. I opened my eyes and looked at him. His eyes were soft and kind, and he had the faintest smile when he saw that I was looking at him. My heart dropped to my stomach, and I had to stop myself from letting out a small gasp.

Jaime reached his hand up and placed it gently on my cheek, stroking it ever so softly. "Jaime..." I whispered quietly. His eyes never left mine as he moved his face in close to mine. I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for what was coming next.

His lips connected with my cheek gently, and my heart stopped. He pulled away and smiled before pulling his hand away. "We should probably go ahead and get ready to go." Jaime said gently. He pulled himself away from me and got up to throw on a shirt. I dragged myself out of bed and upstairs to my room. I grabbed a pair of jeans and slipped them on, throwing on a hoodie to top it off. I glanced in the mirror and saw the heavy bags under my eyes, wincing slightly. I normally would've put on some make up to cover it, but I felt like it just would've been a waste of time.

I glanced at the clock and saw that it was only midnight, and that we had only been asleep for a few hours. I pulled my hair up into a ponytail and slid some shoes on, trekking back downstairs when I was finished. Jaime was already dressed and waiting for me at the door. He gave me a quick smile and I followed him out the door to his car.

"Vic's awake, and he said he wanted to wait to hear what the doctor had to say until we were all here." Mike told as as we were all gathered around outside of Vic's door. We let Mike walk in first and we all filed in behind him.

Vic was laying in bed watching some old time movie on the TV. When he heard us walking in, he looked over at us and gave us all a weak smile. "Hey guys." He said tiredly. We gathered around his bed, and when I finally got a good look at him, I couldn't help but let out a gasp. He looked absolutely awful. His eyes were bloodshot, and the bags underneath them looked nearly permanent. He cheeks were beginning to sink in, and his face was completely drained. I teared up looking at him, and had to turn away for a few seconds. Luckily, the doctor walked in, and he took all of our gazes away from Vic.

"Ahh, I'm glad to see that you're all here. Unfortunately, I don't really have anything good to report. Victor, it seems as though your liver is completely shutting down. We've put you on the donor recipient list, but there's no telling how long the wait could be. The moment we hear something, we'll let you know. As of right now, you seem to be stable, Victor, but only time will tell how long that will last. I'm sorry." The doctor gave us a curt nod before walking out the door. We stood there in silence, unsure of what to say in this situation.

"Well shit, this kinda sucks." Vic said with a light tone. Mike immediately curled up his fist and shut his eyes. He took a deep breath and walked right out of the room without looking back. Vic sighed a distraught sigh and looked down at the blanket that was covering him. "I'm sorry, guys. I really just don't know how I'm supposed to act." He said quietly without looking at any of us.

"Vic, there's no need to apologize, truly. No one is expecting you to be able to take news like this lightly." Tony said, and I nodded my head in agreement. Jaime sat there in silence, gazing at the floor.

"I've got to go." Jaime muttered before walking out the door. Vic sighed again and turned to look out the window.

"Why did you do it in the first place, Vic? What in the world would possess you to do something like that?" I asked him with tears on the verge of spilling over.

"I don't know, Eve... Everything was just so... overwhelming. I didn't want to deal with it anymore, and I didn't want to be a burden on anyone..." I couldn't hold back the tears anymore, and they fell silently down my face.

"Vic, you're anything but a burden." Tony calmly told him. "We're your best friends, we're supposed to be here for you. You're like a brother to me, dude. And did you even think about Mike? You know he loves you and you know he'd do anything for you in a heartbeat, as would any of us." Tony's voice cracked and he brought his hands up to his face, wiping his hand over his eyes and mouth. "I just don't understand, Vic."

Vic opened his mouth to say something, but before he could get anything out, a nurse came in carrying two IV bags.

"I'm sorry guys, but we're going to have to ask you to leave. It's well after visitor hours, and you were really only allowed to be in here as long as the doctor was. Sorry." Tony and I nodded our head in understanding and she waited for us to leave. I walked over to Vic and kissed him on the cheek, telling him that I loved him. He smiled weakly at me once more, and I turned to walk out with Tony.

I rode back to the house with him because both Jaime and Mike were nowhere to be found. I half expected to see their cars in the driveway when we returned, but I was faced with immediate disappointment when we pulled up and they weren't there. I said goodnight to Tony and headed up to Jaime's room to fall asleep. I didn't want to sleep alone in my room, and I figured he would be home soon enough and he would understand if he walked in and saw me sleeping in his bed. I pulled off my jeans and crawled into the bed, cuddling the pillow that smelled like him and falling asleep faster than I had in the past few days.

********

I woke up a few hours later hearing banging coming from downstairs. I was confused at first, but when I realized that it was probably either Mike or Jaime, I let out a sigh. I swung my legs over the edge of the bed and stretched before getting up. I pulled my pair of jeans back on and headed downstairs.

I followed the banging around into the kitchen and turned the corner to see Jaime standing there........with the blonde from the party the other night. He had his lips attached to hers and she was running her hands through his hair. My heart sunk immediately, shocking me with my own reaction. She pulled away from him and opened her eyes, shrieking when she saw me standing there. Jaime jumped and turned, breathing a sigh of relief when he saw that it was just me.

"Holy shit, Eve, you scared us. What're you doing here?" He slurred out, and I knew right from that that he was hammered.

"Uhm, this is my beach house, Hime... Where have you been? Who the fuck is that? And what the fuck do you think you're doing." I snapped with more edge than I had intended.

"This is.... uh.... Carly! And we just went out for a few drinks." He was swaying back and forth slightly, and had to grab on to the counter to keep his balance.

"Hey, uhm, Carly, could you give us a minute?" She looked back and forth between me and Jaime an left the room without a word. I looked over at Jaime who was giving me puppy dog eyes.

"Sit down, Hime. Let me grab you a glass of water." I sighed. I grabbed a glass out of the cabinet and began to fill it up slowly as he sat down at the breakfast bar. "So, where the hell have you been?" I asked, trying to remain calm.

"Like I said, we went out for drinks." He said, avoiding eye contact with me.

"No shit, Jaime. I guess I better ask why in the actual fuck did you decide to go out and get fucking slammed at a time like this?" I nearly shouted, Jaime wincing as I did.

"Maybe because I'm a fucking adult and I can do whatever the fuck I want to?I just learned that my best friend is basically fucking dying. Get the fuck off my back, Eve!" He shouted back at me, staring at me directly in my eyes. My jaw dropped and it felt like my heart completely stopped. Jaime never yelled at me, we'd never even gotten into a big fight before, so to hear him yell at me like that completely broke my heart in two.

I saw the regret form over his face when he realized what he had said, but it was too late. I knew he had meant some of it, even if it was just a small amount. A drunk mouth speaks a sober mind, after all. I slammed his glass of water down on the counter in front of him, shattering it to pieces on impact.

"You're right Jaime, you are an adult. Do whatever the fuck you want. Sorry for giving a shit about you." I said calmly. I turned on my heels and walked out of the kitchen, straight through the front room and out the front door. I didn't bother putting any shoes on or even grabbing my phone. When I reached the end of the driveway, I turned and began to run. I ran as fast as I could, letting my legs decide where to take me.
