Believe You Me

Beyond beautiful is the sound of a ghost

I woke up with the sun shining brightly in my face, silently cursing myself for forgetting to close the curtains last night. I rolled over and looked at my alarm clock flashing 8:30 and groaned internally. I hated that I was such a natural early riser. I rolled back over, willing myself to get five more minutes of sleep.

I had almost fallen back asleep when out of nowhere someone came flying up the stairs of the loft and landed right on top of me.

“Evelyn! Get your ass up, this is important!” I groaned loudly into my pillow before I rolled over. I opened my eyes only to see a pair of big, brown eyes staring right back at me.

“Oh my God, Jaime, do you have any idea what time it is? Get out, I’m going back to sleep.” I rolled back over so that I was no longer facing him. I felt the weight of his body lift as he stood up from the bed, and seconds later he was standing on the other side of my bed with his face directly in front of mine once again. He stuck his bottom lip out, giving me the most pathetic puppy dog face I have ever seen in my life.

“Fine, go back to sleep if you’d like, but if you do you’ll miss out on the big exciting news.” He paused a moment and looked at my blank expression one last time before shrugging and turning away. “Suit yourself then.”

I sighed in defeat before sitting up. “Alright, Hime, what’s this big exciting news?” Jaime whipped back around excitedly with the cheesiest grin on his face, his dimples clearly defined. He leapt and bounded back to the bed, jumping onto the open space next to me and turned to face me.

“We’ve got a show in Huntington Beach on Friday!” Jaime practically shouted in my ear. “You know what that means don’t you?!” It took a minute for my still half asleep mind to process the words that were coming from his mouth. Then it clicked.

“We get to stay at the beach house?!” I shrieked in his face. Jaime nodded, his brown spiky hair bobbing along with him. I let out another shriek before throwing my arms around him, tackling him against the bed.

“We’ve got one whole week in the magic house!” Jaime said into my hair. He rolled out from underneath me, standing up and smoothing his clothes back out. “If I were you I’d start packing your bag. Vic wants to go ahead and leave tomorrow night so that we can actually get a full week at the house. I told him we’d meet at his house at five o’clock so we could all head out together.” He gave me a smile before heading back down the loft stairs. I let myself fall back onto my mess of pillows, my hair sprawled out all around me.

I loved the beach house more than anything. It wasn’t just that it was so close to the beach, but it was such a perfect place to get away when you needed to and just relax. My parents had bought it a few years ago when we first moved to San Diego, and I’ve been there countless time with the guys since then. They didn’t even ask me anymore if it was alright to stay there when a gig was booked anywhere nearby, they knew I was always alright with it. I was excited that we were able to go back; it had been a few months since the last time we were there.

Only about ten minutes after Jaime had headed back downstairs the entire loft started to smell like burnt ass. Jaime let out a yelp from downstairs and I decided that getting up and out of bed would be a good idea before he burnt down the entire building. I didn’t bother to throw on anything over the shorts and tank top I had slept in. Jaime was my best friend so he had seen me at my absolute worst. My morning apparel was nothing new to him.
I headed down the stairs and back into the kitchen area where Jaime was running back and forth from the sink to the stove. The full stench hit me like a brick wall as I walked up next to him.

“Oh my God, Jaime! What the hell did you do?!” I rushed over to the stove where I saw a pan with an unidentifiable black mess on the burner. Jaime dropped the towel that was in his hand, raising both of his arms above his hand in an innocent fashion.

“I was just trying to make us breakfast, Eve!” He gave me an innocent looking pout. I sighed and pointed him out of the kitchen. He stared at the ground while walking out and I turned around to clean up his breakfast disaster.

After the disaster was cleaned, I went over to Jaime who was sitting on the couch, still pouting. I sat down next to him and stared down at the ground. I let out a deep sigh, and he did the same.

“You ruined another one of my pans.” I said casually and quietly. The air was silent for a moment before I broke into a fit of giggles. “When are you going to learn that you can’t cook, Hime?” Jaime broke into a fit of laughter and wrapped his arm around my shoulder, pulling me close to him.

“The same day you learn that you can’t sing, doll.” He replied.

“Hey!” I shrugged him off of me and punched him in his arm, causing him to laugh even more.

“Come on, let’s go grab some breakfast, my treat.” Jaime said while rubbing his arm where I had punched him.

“Yeah alright, let me go throw some clothes on first.” I got off the couch and bounded up the stairs. I grabbed a pullover from my closet and threw on some jeans before heading over to my vanity. My red hip length hair was a mess, so I decided to just throw on a beanie to cover it up.

“Hurry up, Eve! I don’t have time for you to put on your face, I’m starving to death down here!” Jaime shouted mockingly from down the stairs.

“Well if somebody wouldn’t have ruined breakfast in the first place we wouldn’t be in this situation!” I shouted back while I applied a light layer of mascara and eyeliner around my bright green eyes. I gave myself one last look over in the mirror before heading down the stairs.

“Damn girl, it’s about time. I was just about to pass out from the hunger pains, you’re lucky.” I shot him a death glare as he laughed and followed him out the front door.
