Drella

I've Been Having This Dream That We Can Fly

I haven't had time to think about Vic. My time is completely consumed with studying for finals and my final piece for art. We had under three months until we all graduate. I've applied for the best art school in New York, but honestly I don't know if I'm good enough to get in.
Then there was the fact that I'll be leaving San Diego. I know Vic has applied for college here and he got accepted to do graphic design. I'm just so scared to tell him. I know he can go on without me. He's going to be huge. I know he'll do great things. I just wish he'd believe it too. I think he's starting to.
I was due to go out today guitar shopping with Vic. I don't know how I'm going to help really, because I can't even play. But I agreed. I pulled my jacket on and hurried down stairs. I could see Vic's car outside through the sitting room window. I was about to leave.
"Drella!" Mom called. I rolled my eyes and went into the kitchen.
"Yeah?"
"You got a letter," she said quietly. She handed me the envelope and I gripped it tightly. I could see the New York Art Institute emblem in the corner. This was it. I've been waiting since January for this. "Is it?" Mom asked and I nodded. I tore it open and unfolded the letter. Fuck, this is terrifying. My eyes scanned over the words and my breathing became rushed. "What does it say?" Mom asked anxiously.
"I got in," I gasped.
"Really?" she asked excitedly.
"Congratulations blah blah blah. We are happy to offer you a place with us and ask you continue building your portfolio. Blah blah. We would like to invite you to join us for our starter course commencing the day after your graduation," I read out. "Mom," I choked.
"You did it," she breathed. Then she pulled me to her for a hug. I didn't fight it like I normally would have. I just let her. I couldn't believe it. I was going to Art School.
"I need to go," I breathed. I wiped my eyes and hurried out of the house. I got into Vic's car and grinned. I made Vic hug me and he smiled.
"Why you so happy?" he laughed.
"No reason," I shrugged. What was I doing? Vic started driving and tapped on the wheel.
"Hey, have you heard from collages yet?" he suddenly asked. What was I supposed to say?
"No," I muttered.
"I heard from SDU weeks ago,"
"I know. Must be lost in the mail or something," I shrugged.
"You sure you're okay?"
"I'm fine, Victor," I rolled my eyes. We parked up outside a shop and I got out. Vic took me inside and I looked around. I've never seen so many instruments in my life. This place was huge.
"It's cool isn't it," Vic grinned. "I get so stoked when I'm here,"
"Hey Vic," one of the sales guys greeted him.
"Come here often?" I asked dryly.
"Just a little," Vic shrugged. He took me to the guitars and stopped to look. I don't understand the difference. "What do you think I should get?"
"It depends what you want. One that goes NerNerNer or one that goes ner,"
"Was that your impression of an acoustic?"
"The last one was," I agreed.
"It was good," he mocked.
"Shut up," I nudged him.
"I'm looking for a electric," he explained.
"Oh," I muttered. "I like the black one,"
"How come?"
"Will you take the piss if I reply it's shiny?"
"I will,"
"Then I think the body and neck of that guitar has an allure to it that the others don't. Also, when you're on stage it won't make you look washed out," I explained.
"Good call," he nodded. "Trent, can I try that one?!" Vic called. A guy came over and got it down. Vic took a seat and ran his thumb over the strings. I heard the sound and it sounded weird. I guess because it's not plugged in. Vic played a few chords. "Want a go?" he raised his eyebrows.
"I can't play,"
"Come here," he urged. Vic sat me down and forced the guitar on me. He placed my fingers over the strings at the neck and then made me run my thumb over the strings. "You're better than me now," he teased.
"Funny, Victor," I smiled.
"I'll have that one," Vic told Trent. Trent took it and went to pack it away for Vic. "Come on, Ella," he said. We went to the till and Vic paid.
"Getting short of picks?" Trent asked.
"No, this one got me a shit load for my birthday," he replied and pointed his thumb at me.
"And I also got you one signed by Thomas DeLonge," I said proudly.
"Wow, one lucky guy," Trent grinned. "How long have you been together?" he asked as he handed over the guitar.
"What?" Vic laughed.
"He is not my boyfriend," I rushed.
"Definitely not. I have a girlfriend. Drella is my best friend,"
"Woah," Trent said defensively. "Sorry, dude," he added. Vic started walking out of the shop and I followed. We got in his car and I turned up the radio.
"I can't believe he thought we were dating," Vic said.
"I know. Ew," I muttered.
