Smoke. The girl watched, as the flames grew bigger, hotter, spreading quickly. The numerous colours hidden in the fire fascinated her. Slowly, she lifted her hand and reached towards it. The flames were reaching out to her, inviting her in, the wind whispering in to the girl’s ears, telling her, daring her to touch the fire. Around her, the sound of people running filled her ears, their feet pounding on the ground.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

The girl whimpered and covered her ears. Too much noise. Why is there so much noise? She shook her head furiously, as if she could make those noises disappear. Far away, there were a lot of screaming and crying. The sounds grew and reached past her covered ears. No. No. No.

Vic and Mike watched in shock, as the flames quickly surrounded her. Why isn’t she running? They shouted and yelled at her but it was like she was in a different world. It was complete chaos around them, people were screaming, running around, panicking.

“We have to help her!” Jake, Vic’s best friend exclaimed.

“We can’t, the fire is all around her, and we’ll get hurt!”

“But we have to try!”

Jake took off, ignoring Vic’s pleads as he made his way into the building. The firefighters ran after him, but he was fast, for an eight year old.

Vic and Mike sat down, waiting for the firemen to return with Jake and possibly her too. Minutes went by until they reappeared with someone in his arms. It wasn’t Jake.

Vic felt his heart drop and he ran, he ran until he felt like his legs were on fire. Fire, he thought, that’s not what killed my best friend. She did. It was her that killed Jake. Nicole killed Jake, and she was a murderer.
