To live in love and die

One

“SAM!” someone screamed hysterically in my ear. Why would someone do that to me? I moaned loudly and buried my face in my pillow. “Go away” I muttered.
“Don’t be stupid Sam we have to go. It’s 8:30. Class starts in an hour.” My very annoying roommate, Sophie said. “You know how Rob gets when we’re late.”
“Rob’s cool, he won’t mind.” I said groggily as I sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
“And cool he is, but he’s already covered up for us being late like, five times.” She countered. “I wouldn’t want my favorite teacher to be fired for lack of discipline enforcement.”
I laughed at her. “You only say that because you think he’s hot.” I said as a big fluffy pillow hit me in the head lightly.
“HE IS, THOUGH!” She shrieked and pulled me up to my feet. “Hurry up; I want to get something to eat before class!”
“Alright I’m coming.” I waved her off and she left the room to continue getting ready.
I walked into my small bathroom and regarded my reflection in the mirror. My dark hair was a complete mess. I groaned as I walked to the shower and turned the water on. I stripped of my clothes as the water turned burning hot, just like I liked it.
I saw myself in the mirror and decided I should cut back on some of my chocolate cravings. I sighed and stepped into the pits-of-hell water. I scrubbed clean and shaved my body quickly.
Turning the water off behind me as I wrapped myself in a towel, I applied minimum make-up to my face quickly. Too lazy for fanciness today. I blow-dried my hair mid –way and got into a pair of dark jeans, a wine colored long sleeved shirt and vans. I put my Deathly Hallows necklace around my neck and changed my earrings to simple hoops.
“SAMANTHA MARTINEZ HURRY YOUR SORRY ASS UP! I WANT FOOD!” My dearest Sophie called from the living area.
I grabbed my back and slung it over my shoulder. Sketchbook, check. Charcoal and graphite pencils, check. Colored pencils, check. Eraser, blender, and pencil sharpener, check. I was all set.
Five minutes later we walked down the street to campus. Sophie and I attended San Diego’s community Art College, and lived in an apartment complex just a block away. To our greatest luck, there was a Starbucks and a breakfast place across the street from campus.
“I’ll go get our bagels, you go get the coffee.” Sophie said, and didn’t even wait for my answer as she jogged across the street and entered the breakfast place.
I sighed and opened the door to Starbucks, hearing the familiar jingle that announced a customer’s arrival. The place was mildly full. People sat chilling, taking their morning coffee and working on their laptops, others reading books.
“Good morning, how can I help you?” A pretty red-head with freckles splashed across her face said to me in a nice tone. I couldn’t determine whether her politeness was fake or not, and didn’t really care honestly.
“Hi, I’ll have two vanilla cappuccinos please.” I answered. Lucky for me that Sophie and I liked the same drink.
“That’ll be $6.45, please.” The girl said with an easy smile. Maybe not fake.
I rummaged through my backpack, making a mess of pencils, charcoal and paper inside. Dammit, that always happens.
“SHIT,” I exclaimed as I dropped my bag back on the counter in defeat. “I forgot my wallet.”
The girl behind the Starbucks counter looked at me with a now obviously fake polite smile, masking her annoyance.
This was really embarrassing. But hey, I was asleep like, 20 minutes ago. My grogginess usually disappears after at least an hour of waking up. “I’m sorry, just scratch my order.” I say weakly as she starts typing on the keyboard with a noticeable frown on her face.
“No wait. I’ll get that.” A deep voice said behind me. I saw a tattooed hand reach out from behind me and give the cashier a $10.
What? I turned around in surprise. “You didn’t have to do tha—“ My voice caught in my throat as I regarded the person who had decided to pay for my coffee, who was standing behind me with his hands in his pockets, body covered in tattoos, jean jacket over a t-shirt, and hat on his head, as always.
He regarded me the same, a small smile playing along his face. “Nice necklace.” He said, pointing at my neck with a hand that held the same symbol tattooed on it.
“You’re Mike Fuentes.” I stated. My throat was closing up and I was sure as hell my eyes were about to pop out of their sockets.
“So I’ve been told.” He said. He talked over my shoulder to the cashier and made his order, handing her another bill.
I just stood there completely dazed. The drummer from my favorite band in the whole world was standing in front of me, paying for my goddamn coffee. I must be dreaming, I thought. This couldn’t be true. Mike Fuentes, from Pierce The Veil.
I heard a guy behind the counter announce that my two vanilla cappuccinos were ready, and walked over numbly to take them. Approaching Mike again, I struggled to control the tone of my voice. “Hey, um, thanks for paying. My friend is just next door and I’ll ask her for some money.” I said, my voice starting to regain its normal, casual tone. “I can come and go really quickly to pay you back.”
Mike smiled. “Are you kidding? I wouldn’t let you pay me back.” He took his own cup from the counter and took a sip. “It’s on me.” He said.
“You really don’t have to do that.” I said, blushing a deep red, I’m sure.
“It’s okay, really.” He said shrugging.
“If you say so.” I spoke lightly and flashed a smile at him.
Just in that moment, Sophie decided to come waltzing in, holding two plastic containers with bagels inside. “Hey Sam, now we’re really late—“ She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw that I was not alone. “You look familiar.” She stated in Mike’s directin, blinking a couple of times, looking him up and down.
Sophie glanced at me with her eyebrows furrowed. “Isn’t this one of the guys from that band that you talk about all the time?” She asked in a genuinely innocent tone. I loved her to death, but sometimes she really had a thing for embarrassing me.
“Uh, this is my roommate Sophie Sanders.” I said; my face hot from embarrassment. Great, now Mike was going to think I was just another obsessed fan girl. Which I technically was. “Sophie, this is Mike Fuentes, the drummer from Pierce The Veil.” I used my hands to gesture between them in an introductory way.
“Oh yes! That’s the name of the band!” Sophie exclaimed, and fumbled with the bagels to stretch out a hand at Mike. “Sam here really loves your music. She listens to you guys all day long; seriously it’s not even funny anymore.” She says while smiling.
Mike smiled a little and shook her hand politely. “Nice to meet you, Sophie.” I saw his eyes linger on my stunningly attractive friend, strawberry blonde hair, with big bright green eyes, and the curves of a super model.
I felt pretty sad about that, but I couldn’t really blame him. Sophie really was gorgeous. “I owe you one Mike, thanks for paying.” I said, scratching the back of my neck nervously.
“Really, it’s no big deal.” He smiled widely and took another sip of his coffee.
“Um, Sam. I’m sorry to interrupt your moment with Mike here, but class starts in 5 minutes.” Sophie said, tugging on my elbow not so gently.
Did I really have to leave? I was in the presence of Mike fucking Fuentes! But I guess every fairytale has an end. “Okay okay, I’m coming.” I look back at Mike and shoot him a smile. “It was really great meeting you. And as Sophie here said earlier, I really am a big fan. Thank you for doing what you do.” I say, hoping I didn’t sound ridiculous.
“Thank you for supporting us.” He says back.
I wave at him a little and mouth ‘bye’ at him, as Sophie starts dragging me to the door. As I start turning my body around I hear him ask from behind.
“Wait! Sam,” I turn to face him, shocked. “You’re a student at the Art College?” He asks.
“Yeah, I’m a senior.” I reply smoothly.
“That’s great.” He smiles and lifts his hand to wave goodbye. “Good luck with your classes, I hope you don’t get in trouble for being late.”
“Oh, it’ll be worth it.” The words stumble out of my mouth before I could help it. My cheeks flush crimson and I follow Sophie out of the door quickly, embarrassment washing through me.
As I leave through the front door of Starbucks, I step out into a bright sunny morning, Mike’s chuckles fading into a background behind me.
