Tangled In The Great Escape

Punch Bag

VIC'S POV

'Don't you get it, Vic? Nobody likes you!' he spat.

'You're a fucking piece of shit!' Shouted Mike, launching one my my shoes at the wall. 'Leave Skye alone!' Storming out of my room, he slammed the door behind him.

He's right, Vic. Stay away from her. She deserves a lot better than you.

A ping coming from my computer pulled me out of my thoughts. I stumbled over, sniffling whilst holding on the part of my ribs that Mike had punched, and read the message I'd received via Facebook.

From: Skye Dawson
Hey :) how are you?

With Facebook's not-so-smart invention that meant people could see whether or not you'd read their message, I knew I had to reply.

I'm good, thanks. You?

I'm good.
Were you okay at school? You seemed angry :(

sorry bye

I instantly shut the tab. I badly wanted to go and find a blade, but I had been clean for so long. Needing something, I began to kick and punch my wall until my knuckles were raw and bleeding.

SKYE'S POV

Reading over Vic's message, I sighed as it didn't seem like him. To my disgust, Mike then texted me. Could this evening get any worse?

From: Mike Fuentes

To: Mike Fuentes

From: Mike Fuentes
Doing much?x

To: Mike Fuentes
Not really, you?

From: Mike Fuentes
Nothing, I'm so bored:( You should come over again, my parents are going away for the weekend ;)

To: Mike Fuentes
Oh, cool.

Thankfully, he gave up after that. Retreating to my bed, I scurried under the covers and grabbed 'Looking For Alaska' off my nightstand. I tried to put all my attention in the book, but I couldn't help but worry about Vic.

Spotting Kellin and Jaime the next morning, I decided not to tell them about Vic's odd departure. 'Hey,' I smiled as I approached them. I was truly thankful for acquiring some good friends, even though we weren't close yet.

'Alright?' smiled Jaime.

'Yeah, where's Vic?'

'He went to the toilet,' he said.

'Oh right,' I nodded.

After a few minutes of conversing, I left the guys to begin my day of boring classes and people whispering as they looked towards my legs. I knew the drill.

Standing up after 4th period, I smiled internally as it was lunch. I lifted my bag, ignoring the guy behind me whispering 'emo cutter', and left my SE classroom. Walking down the hall, I picked up my pace as I felt Mike's eyes on me. He knows. I heard him making a comment about me, a bad one. At least that's over I guess.

Entering the canteen, I joined the end of the line and pulled out my purse as I waited for my food. The line moved fairly quickly and I was soon handing over my money to the small lunch lady. Picking my tray up, I spotted the guys and began to make my way over to their table. As I got closer, they all (except Vic, who was concentrating on his vegetables) looked up at me. They know too, there goes my chance at having friends.

'Skye, we need to talk,' said Jaime in a hushed tone, hunching over the table.

'What?' I asked. Vic looked up, he seemed confused. He doesn't know? Oh, well this should be bundles of fun.

'There's a rumor that you self harm, is that true?' Vic's head snapped up and his eyes met mine. Unable to lie whilst sharing eye contact with him, I broke it off and looked away.

'No,' I stated.

'Okay,' nodded Kellin. I felt terrible immediately. 'If you ever think about it, call one of us. We're here for you, y'know that right? Even though we've only just met?' He laughed a little.

'Right,' I smiled. 'Thank you for caring though.'

Jaime then changed the subject, meaning that after a matter of minutes we somehow ended up talking about commercials. Finishing my lunch, I dug in my bag and pulled out a sheet for Art. It was a worksheet I was suppose to have completed for next period.

'What's that?' asked Kellin.

'Art homework,' I sighed. 'I got stuck last night so I just left it, it's to be in next period. Any of you take Art?'

'Vic did,' said Jaime.

'Can you help me?' I asked.

'Yeah, okay,' he said, getting out of his seat and coming round to sit next to me. He scooted close to me and my heart rate increased as I felt his leg against mine.

Reading along with me, he murmured to himself as he check ed my answers. 'That's because of the tone,' he said, pointing towards a question. I filled the box in before flipping the page to the next set of questions. The last question involved drawing a door, something I was terrible at.

'Oh my,' I laughed, covering it with my hand.

Vic shooed me off and examined my drawing. 'All you need to do,' he said, leaning right over me and grabbing the rubber, 'is not shade so much there.' He rubbed the paper gently before blowing the rubbings away to reveal a much better looking door. 'There,' he said, patting my leg. He is touching my leg. Oh my goodness, he is touching my leg. Do not blush, Skye. Do not blush. I looked down to see his knuckles all torn and red, what the fuck?

'Thanks,' I choked out, biting my lip as he want back round to finish his fruit pot.

'You okay?' asked Kellin as I shoved my things back in my bag, crumpling up the odd sheet of paper.

'Yep' I said,' I'm fine.'

VIC'S POV

Sitting in last period (which unluckily for me was Math), I doodled on my jotter as I waited for Jaime to finish the last question.

'Done,' he said proudly. 'You get 456876?'

'Yeah,' I said, putting my pencil in the center of the textbook.

'So, you should ask Skye for her number.'

'What the fuck, Jaime?'

'She's a pretty girl,' he said, 'I wouldn't pass it up.'

'Pretty? She's freaking beautif-'

'She's what?' he laughed, wiggling his eyebrows.

'Wildly out of my league,' I corrected myself. 'She doesn't like me, there's now way.'

'So you like her?'

'There's no chance of us being together,' I said, sighing a little.

'You do!' He exclaimed, slamming his hands on the desk. 'Oh wow, this is great.' He looked at me seriously, 'ask her for her number.'

'No,' I groaned. 'I don't want to be rejected.'

'You're an idiot, friends can exchanged phone numbers. If all goes to fuck, just be friends. Do it or I'll tell her,' he threatened.

'Seriously, Jaime? Black mail?'

'Mhmm, your choice.'

'Fuck you,' I scoffed.

Exiting the school with Jaime, I hoped that he forgot about our conversation 20 minutes before. Holding his hand out, I soon realised that he was waving to Skye. Oh shit, here goes nothing.

'Good luck, dude,' he whispered before rushing back indoors. Way to play it cool, Jaime.

'Where's he off to?' She laughed, coming up the steps. What, she likes Jaime now? Oh god.

'He's going to his locker I think,' I guessed, genuinely not knowing where he was going. Okay, Vic. It's Friday, ask if she has plans. It's not hard. 'Y-You got any plans for the weekend?'

'None,' she said. 'What about you?'

'Nah, my parents are away. I'm sure my brother already told you though...'

'Yeah. No offence, but he's kind of an ass.'

Smiling down at my bruised knuckle, I laughed and winced in pain at the same time as the pain in my ribs spiked.

'You okay?' she said, grabbing my sides.

'I'm fine,' I said, clearing my throat and trying not to blush. 'We should, uh, exchange numbers.'

'Sure,' she said, taking out her phone. Giving it to me, I typed in my digits before handing it back to her. 'I'll text you so you have mine too,' she smiled.

'Awesome,' I said. 'Are you getting the bus home?'

'Yeah, you?'

'Yeah, I had an argument with my brother.'

'Oh,' she said. 'We better go anyway, don't want to miss the bus.'

I would happily miss the bus if it meant more time with you.

'Yeah,' I said, pushing my thoughts aside.
