Did You Call Me Last Night Just Cus' You Couldn't Get Laid?

Chapter Nineteen

The 14th of July rolled around far too quickly. I’d told Louis everything I knew about the situation and he’d agreed to support me 100 percent, despite the fact that I knew he knew deep down that I wasn’t ready for this.

I woke up 2 hours before I was due to meet Destiny and the two social workers that were coming with her. I had a shower and scrubbed myself clean, also washing my long hair which was now completely brown and boring; I couldn’t wait to dye it red again. I decided to dress pretty casually, not wanting to scare Destiny or make a false impression, besides it was too hot for anything dressy.

When I was changed I applied my makeup, dabbing on some lip shine and drawing on eyeliner flicks. I straightened my hair and left it down, so it fell just past my waist.
Around 10am my phone started to vibrate in my pocket, I answered it, knowing that it was the Social Worker telling me she was here.

“Hello,”

“Hello Alaska, its June here, I’m just outside the entrance to the Comcast Theatre.”

“Alright, I’ll come out and meet you,”

“Thank you Alaska, I’ll see you in a minute, bye.”

“Bye.”

I decided to head out to meet them by myself and have Louis sit in while I spoke to the social worker later on. I thought that my first meeting with Destiny should be a private affair.

It only took about two minutes to walk to the entrance, and by the time I was about 10 metres away I had spotted Destiny and the two social workers that were with her. My eyes focused on Destiny, studying her appearance.

The little girl was tiny, she looked about 5 years old at the most, nowhere near 7. She had long brown hair that lay straight and big angelic blue eyes. She was adorable, but for some reason that made me even more scared to look after her.

When I was close enough to hear the one of the Social Workers spoke.

“Alaska? I’m June.” She said, smiling at me. She had short brown hair cut in a bob and a friendly face. “This is Jenny, she’ll be looking after Destiny today.” She motioned over to the other woman who had medium length blonde hair, before motioning over to Destiny.

I shook both of the ladies hands before bending down to talk to Destiny.

“Hey Destiny, I’m your cousin Alaska. Your mummy was my mummy’s sister. I’ll probably be looking after you soon.”

“Hello,” was all she said in response, her voice was very quiet and timid, which worried me even further. It was going to be even harder to bond with a child that was shy.

“Do you want to hold my hand whilst we walk over to the bus?” I asked her, and she nodded in response, holding out her hand which I took.

I began walking, the two social workers trailing behind us. I decided to explain to Destiny a little bit about my life.

“Because I’m big I have to work, and my job is to sell t-shirts for my friend’s band. They play music all over the world, which means I have to travel all over the world to sell the t-shirts for them.” I began to tell her.

“If you look after me, I come too?” She questioned, her big blue eyes looking up at me. I was shocked at how bad her speech was for a seven year old. She could only just string a sentence together, surely that wasn’t normal.

“No sweetie, I’m afraid not. See I have to stop doing that job to look after you, because you need to go to school. I have a flat in Florida, and if the social workers let us we’re going to go and live there.”

“I no need to go to school. Mummy and daddy never make me go, never been.” That took me a few minutes to register, most kids started school when they were five, why had she never been? I guessed that was why her speech was so slow.

“You need to go to school darling it’s important, that’s where you learn stuff and become a big girl.”

When Destiny didn’t respond I decided to end the conversation, as we weren’t too far away from the bus. When we arrived I pointed at and began to tell her about it.

“That’s where I live when I’m travelling, it’s called a tour bus, it’s like a house but it moves so we can go to all different types of places.”

“Dhats you’re house,” She said, pointing at it.

“Yeah, I suppose so.” I told her, dropping her hand and going to open the door. I had to carry Destiny up the steps because her legs were too little to reach between them.

There was no one in the bus except for Louis, as I’d told everyone to make sure they stayed out of the way this morning.

“What’s on his arms?” Destiny questioned, pointing at Louis’ tattoos.

“They’re tattoos; they’re like permanent drawings on your body.” I told her.

“Oh, pretty.” She told me, pointing at my thigh tattoo.

“Yeah,” I said smiling back at her, glad she was talking to and taking an interest in me. “Louis is my best friend, so when you come live with me you might see a lot of him.”

Louis looked over to her and gave her a big cheesy grin before sticking his tongue out at her, causing her to blush slightly.

“Is it okay if we have that meeting now Alaska?” June asked me.

“Sure, we’ll go through to the back longue and Destiny can stay here on these sofas. There’s a tv there if she wants to watch that. Just let her do what she wants,” I told the other social worker. “Is it okay if Louis comes through to the meeting with me?”

“That’s fine,” June told me, and I led her through to the back longue, hopeful that I’d be able to take on Destiny.
