Are We Losing, or Beginning?

Chapter 15

Her eyelids fluttered as I planted a kiss on her cheek, the temperature of her skin a little too warm.

"Would you like to take a shower or anything?" I asked and she looked confused for a second.

"Are you telling me I smell?" She giggled and then looked down as if she didn't know where her boldness has come from. I knew we had already had this conversation but I enjoyed joking around with her.

"Well it is possible that, that smell is me, but it's more likely that the smell is you." I joked and she shook her head with a laugh.

"In that case, yes I'd very much like to take a shower." She replied in a sweet voice, "but you can take one after me because I stand by the fact the smell is you." and I smiled and rose to my feet.

"Then the tour begins." I outstretched my hand to her, "shall we?" She giggled with a slight blush and took my hand, rising to her feet.

"We shall." She replied with the brightest smile taking over her face. I liked that I could make her smile, it suited her so well. I guided her over to where the bunks were.

"This lovely place is where Pierce The Veil rest their angelic heads after being total rockstars." She laughed and rolled her eyes playfully. I guided her past the bunks to the back lounge, just before the back lounge was a door to the left where the bathroom was, I stopped in front of it.

"And this room, just beyond this door, is where smelly girls can find a shower." I was being theatrical and over the top and it was honestly not a side of me that was ever really witnessed by anybody, I just felt really comfortable around her, like I could be so ridiculously stupid around her and she'd never even consider judging me. It was a good feeling.

"...and sweaty cockstars...oops I meant rockstars." She retorted playfully and then blushed and it was good to see her come out of her shell a little, it seemed to even shock her that she was becoming more confident around me, I mean I am just a regular guy but she's naturally shy so it felt good that she was getting more comfortable around me too.

"Touché" I narrowed my eyes at her and then laughed. She slowly ejected her hand from mine and I'd forgotten I was still even holding it until she did that, she smiled at me softly as if to soften the blow of rejection I felt slowly seeping in me. Was I being ridiculous? I cleared my throat, trying not to let the awkward atmosphere ruin the good time we were having.

"There should be a clean towel in there for you, I'll just hang at the front of the bus until you're done, if you need anything, just shout." She nodded and smiled, her hand on the handle of the door but not quite opening and entering it yet. The air felt thick, like there were a million unspoken words hanging in it and she looked at me with an expression my jumbled brain couldn't quite decipher right now. Expectancy? I didn't know if she was waiting for me to speak, say those unspoken words that imaginarily floated above us but I didn't say anything, I just stood there like an idiot.

"Thank you." She said in a small voice that snapped me out of my thought process, I smiled and told her it was no problem and then I waited until she had closed the bathroom door behind her and I headed off of the bus.

Mike and Casey were just headed towards the bus as I stepped out into the blinding sun.

"You didn't kill Savannah while we were gone did you?" Casey joked and I shot him a look.

"Am I ever going to live that down?" I groaned and leaned against the bus.

"Probably not." He replied, slapping me on the shoulder and laughing. Mike lit a cigarette and took a drag of it, the smoke falling delicately from his mouth.

"Seriously though, where is Savi?" Mike asked.

"Showering." I replied with a yawn, the sun was taking all of my energy away, I really should drink more water.

"Oooh, you're smoother than I thought, Vic." Casey smirked and him and Mike fist bumped. I rolled my eyes.

"Guys," I said flatly, "it's not like that, she was too hot so she's just taking a shower to cool off." Mike and Casey laughed again.

"I bet she did." Casey wiggled his eyebrows. I punched him in the arm and mumbled a nice 'fuck you' to him.

--------

The signing was five minutes shy of beginning, we got seated at our table, I offered to Savannah a seat at the table but she declined saying it wasn't fair and that she was happy standing off to the side with Casey. Mike was sat on my right and Jaime was on my left, Tony was on Mike's right. Us guys had some general chat just to pass the time before the signing started and Jaime turned to me with a big smile and asked how my shower with Savannah went earlier, I groaned and rolled my eyes at him.

"Fuck sake, it wasn't like that, Jaime. Quit it." I was getting irritated, it wasn't like that between me and Savannah, we were friends and although I loved the way she was a mix of nervousness and impulsive confidence and the way her whole face brightened when she smiled, we'd only just decided we were really friends and not just a band member and a fan. Things had to go slowly.

The signing started, it only looked like a few fans had lined to see us but if I stood I could see there were at least thirty more fans here than our last stop and that meant a hell of a lot to me. When the first girl got to me I smiled and said hello and she covered her mouth with her hand and began to shake, repeating the words 'oh my gosh' over and over. I chuckled and asked if she'd like a hug and she nodded her head enthusiastically, I rose to my feet, leaning over the table, I hated these stupid tables, you could never really hug properly and I felt like it was a barrier between us and the fans, but I wasn't really in a position to complain.

"Thank you so much, your music has done so much for me." The girl cried into my ear and I smiled warmly.

"It's only created thanks to people like you who support us so exceptionally, so thank you." I replied, and security began telling her to move along, she smiled widely and moved over to Jaime. I checked behind my shoulder, looking at Savannah, she smiled when I caught her eyes and I smiled back. Her hair was piled on top of her head, almost dry, (probably the only perk of the sun beating down so much) tendrils framing her make-up-less face.

The line moved pretty fast, I hugged, smiled, signed, reassured, thanked and laughed, it was actually a real blast. However now and again the fact Savannah was stood only a few metres behind me kept creeping into my head and I fought the urge to keep turning around just to get a glimpse of her. A shy girl came up to me, she wasn't in the line, she just headed straight up, but I didn't mind. She looked at her feet as she spoke and her hands disappeared up her sleeves.

"Hi there." I smiled, "are you okay?" I tilted my head to the side, she looked a little upset and it slowly broke my heart.

"Um...is there a girl here called Savannah..." She almost whispered and I leaned in closer just to hear her.

"Er, yeah, yeah, she's just over there." I turned and pointed towards her and the girl nodded slowly before turning and walking around the table, I watched her shuffle over to Savannah, my brows furrowed, what was going on? I watched them talk briefly, and then the girl wrapped her arms around Savannah and they embraced for a while, Savannah looked up at me, her face a picture of anguish and worry. I almost frowned.

Once the signing was over my butt was numb from sitting down for so long. I stood up and stretched my arms above me with a yawn, I knew I'd sleep good tonight.

"Back to the bus for drinks?" Mike asked, stretching too, Jaime wooped and Tony nodded. I managed a smile but my mind was on Savannah and that girl, when I looked again the girl had gone and I walked over the Savannah. She was picking at her nail polish, something I'd never seen her do before.

"Hey." I smiled as I approached her, she looked up and smiled.

"Hi." She replied.

"What did that girl want?" I asked as politely as possible, she shuffled uncomfortably and then looked me in the eyes. There was something underneath the surface, but I didn't know what, and I wanted to know, I really wanted to. Eyes never lie right?

"She just told me that she was at the concert I was supposed to be at when I...you know," she shuddered, "and she said her parents died in a..." She sucked in a breath like the next words would be the hardest to say, "-accident . Yes car accident, and she thought I was really strong and she's glad I'm alive." I smiled warmly, I liked when our fans were nice to people we brought on tour with us. But if Savannah was telling the truth, why did she look so upset? I didn't want to press the matter too much, it wasn't fair, so I changed the subject.

"We're all having drinks back on the bus, you up for it?" I asked, hoping the answer was yes.

"Sure." She replied sweetly and all six of us headed back to the bus.

"Whiskey?" Mike shoved the bottle in Savannah's face, he was already wasted, but he hadn't touched any alcohol yet. Savannah shook her head with a smile and Mike pulled out a rolled up joint from his pocket, offering her some, this time she scrunched up her face and shook her head, it seemed like it was time to swoop in. I headed on over to her, Jaime was the designated driver so he was sat on the couch texting his ex girlfriend, things hadn't ended on bad terms and I knew he still loved her, Casey was almost passed out, he had been on the Jack since about 12pm, the guy was a blast, Tony was on the phone and had been for the past two hours, whom he was talking to I had no clue.

"Hi, take a walk with me?" I whispered in Savi's ear and she turned her head towards me and nodded. We were about to set off for the next Warped Tour stop but we had a few minutes before then and a walk was just what I needed, and judging by Savannah's behaviour it was just what she needed too.

"Gladly." She chirped.

The air was cooling down, it made my skin tingle, it was nice to not be scolded every single time I exited the tour bus. That was the main reason I loved sunsets. It's still warm but not too hot, and of course they're beautiful.

"Are you okay?" I questioned Savannah, she'd had her phone clutched in her hand for the past hour, staring at the screen blankly every now and then.

"Yeah, I'm fine." She reassured me, tucking some hair behind her ear in what seemed like a nervous gesture.

"Did something that girl said upset you in anyway?" I felt like I was annoying her with all of my questions but she seemed a little off and I hated the thought of her being upset.

"No, she was lovely." She smiled at the memory and it looked so natural on her face, like it belonged there. "I'm okay, Vic, I promise." She reassured and I took that as a hint for me to stop bothering her about it - so I did.

Once again she checked her phone, her face fell as she read something, before I could question anything she tucked it quickly in her pocket and smiled.

"I wish you could stay for the full tour." I spoke honestly, trying to lighten the mood and salvage the good day we had had.

"Yeah, me too." And the corners of her mouth lifted up slightly.

"Savannah...I-"

"Vic! Savi! We're setting off, let's go!" Casey shouted from the door of the bus, I sighed, I was enjoying having Savannah all to myself, as selfish as that sounds.

"Yeah, coming." I shouted back and we did a one-eighty and headed back for the bus.

-----

"Vic!" Someone spoke. Loudly. I felt my shoulders shaking but I didn't respond, I was tired and my head hurt. I opened my eyes and everything was so bright, I snapped them shut again.

"Vic will you please get the fuck up, we have a situation!" Mike snapped and I groaned and rolled over, the around me shifted and I smacked against the floor with a loud thud. I groaned in pain and rubbed my eyes, pushing off the floor and standing up.

"Jesus my head hurts." I moaned and Mike chuckled.

"So what's going on?" I asked, stretching my limbs, trying to make them function properly.

"Well, funny story, Savannah was supposed to go home," I frowned, not comprehending, "we were supposed to get her home." He explained further but my sleepy brain still couldn't comprehend.

"Okay. Well, where is she?" I questioned.

"Hi to you too, Vic." Savannah giggled and I realized what was going on, she was supposed to stay for the show and then we were supposed to get her on a flight before we went to the next stop but now we were at the next stop for Warped and she was still here.

"Shit." I muttered and everyone seemed to simultaneously begin to laugh. We all accumulated in the living area, me still half asleep, everybody else well and truly wide awake.

"What are we going to do?" Jaime asked.

"I thought you said you had everything planned, Himes." I wasn't having a go at him, I was just reminding him of his words.

"Don't blame me, blame Casey, he drove us here." Jaime replied

"What?! And I was supposed to just know that she wasn't supposed to come along with us?"

"Dudes!" Mike yelled before things got out of hand, and we all shut up, "let's not start fighting alright?" We all agreed.

"Oooh, I have an idea!" Tony piped up, "why don't you just stay for today and we'll definitely get you home tonight?" Tony offered, in all honesty, it was a great idea, and the main reason I thought that was because I'd get to spend another whole day with her. A smile rolled over my face as I thought about it.

Before anybody could answer though, somebody's phone started ringing. The majority of us had iPhones and therefore had the same ringtone so we pulled our phones out of our pockets simultaneously; it wasn't mine, and Jaime pushed his back into his pocket, so it couldn't have been his.

"Hello?" Savannah answered her phone and we all put ours away.

"Mom I can explain..." Savannah sounded nervous, her usual smile was upside down and the look of it made me sad too. Whatever her mom replied must have been at a loud volume because she held the phone a couple of inches away from her ear like it would have exploded if she hadn't.

"Sav...let me explain, this is all my fault..." She looked at me, unsure of whether to say yes or no and I pleaded with my eyes, I had to talk to her mom and let her know we hadn't kidnapped her...well not on purpose anyway and somehow I'd convince her mom to let her stay an extra day. She sighed and handed me the phone and I gulped before pressing the phone to my ear.

"Mrs. West, hi it's Vic, I'm really sorry this is all my fault-"

"Nick, do you realize how worried sick I have been? Do you have kids?" She snapped. "Um, no ma'am..." I replied.

"Well then how could you possibly understand?!" I decided to take this conversation elsewhere, everybody's eyes were on me, hopeful and wondering, it was too much. I headed past them all and out into the bright light of the morning. Shielding my eyes from the sun I replied.

"I may not understand personally, Mrs. West, but I can tell how upset you are right now and I can't tell you how sorry I am that this happened." That was a lie - I wasn't sorry at all. I mean yeah it was an accident but I'm glad it happened, I'm glad I didn't have to feel that sinking feeling of disappointment I would have felt if I'd have took Savannah home last night.

"Hmf." Mrs. West made a funny sound and I slapped my hand over my mouth, realizing I just said that out loud. Shit!

"Um..." I started, not really sure how to make it better.

"Nick, I can see you care for my daughter, you're a good friend for her," she paused and I wondered why the term 'friend' made my heart sink, "just have her home by the end of today okay?" And I heard the smile in her voice.

"Seriously? She can stay another day?!" I was so shocked and happy all at the same time, her mom chuckled a little at my childish excitement and then said.

"Yes, just look after her okay?"

"Of course! Thank you Mrs. West!"

"You're welcome, Nick, give Savannah my love." And then the line went dead, it was weird after all this time she still called me Nick but I didn't really mind it, it was kind of comical. I stepped inside the bus again and everyone's eyes were still on me.

"Sorry Sav, got to pack you up and ship you out this instant." Savannah's hopeful expression fell and I burst out laughing.

"I'm kidding, I'm kidding! She said you can stay one more day!" And I'm pretty sure my smile was wide enough to crack my face into two. Everybody cheered, sharing my happiness with her existence. She squealed and ran over to me, throwing her arms around my neck in a brief hug, after a few seconds it's almost like she remembered herself because she broke the hug and blushed deep scarlet, and her eyes dropped to the floor. I poked her rib cage.

"Smile." I whispered, and just like that, she did.

It was getting really noisy, everybody was talking loudly, Mike was pouring himself a whiskey (yes at this early hour) Jaime was talking (loudly) to Tony, Casey was talking loudly too. But when her phone beeped in my hand and Savannah's eyes went wide at the sound of it, I furrowed my brows at her reaction as she took the phone gently from my hands with an expression that screamed she was afraid. She unlocked it and read the message, her shoulders sagged, and her frown deepened, it was almost as if the only reason she was holding it together was because we were around.

"Sav...What is it?" I whispered, attempting to look into her eyes but her eyes were trained at the ground. She shook her head and sighed.

"Fine." I said and before she look up at me I ducked and picked her up, like a fireman would a victim in a burning building, she gasped, obviously shocked, but she barely protested, all she asked was.

"Vic what are you doing?!" The others laughed as I exited the bus carefully, still carrying her. Once outside, a fair few feet away from the bus, I set her down on her feet.

"Right, tell me what's wrong." I demanded but I didn't sound angry, I didn't want to scare her.

"It's nothing, Vic, honest..." She trailed off.

"No tell me! Because every time you check your phone you get this look on your face that makes my heart break, so what's going on?" She wouldn't look me in the eyes, she looked like she was looking for an escape route and I hated the idea of her running away from me.

"It's just..." She trailed off again, but I waited silently, patiently, allowing her to form the sentence in her head first before she told me.

"It's just Casey at home, it's not a big deal." She shrugged timidly and I frowned because I knew that she was lying.
