Are We Losing, or Beginning?

Chapter 9

Casey's face lit up brightly as we all stood in the crowd watching Paramore kill it on the main stage. Hayley bopped around the stage energetically and involved the crowd in a way I couldn't really manage to—because I always have to stand at the mic stand because I play guitar while I sing—all I could think while watching their set was how one day I hope to be on Main Stage, how amazing would that be?

"Are you guys having a good time Pomona?" The crowd screamed enthusiastically, the gang and I included. "Good! Okay, this next song is called For a Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic and I want you guys to help me sing this song okay?" The crowd cheered again and the intro began, Hayley skipped up and down the stage flipping her brightly dyed red hair all over the place.

"I love this song, it's the best on the album, oh god" Casey exclaimed putting her hands in the air, ready to sing along. Savannah agreed with a nod of her head, standing quietly on my right.

"You okay?" I asked, just to make sure, she seemed really quiet.

"Of course" she grinned widely, I hesitated a second, unsure whether to believe her or not, I couldn't stop thinking of her crying at The Way She Feels. I kicked myself for thinking too far into things and over analysing situations that were really simple. Satisfied with her reply I smiled back.

Just talk yourself up
And tear yourself down
You've hit your one wall
Now find a way around
Well whats the problem?
You've got a lot of nerve

Hayley sang the song with fire and I laughed at Casey's enthusiasm to sing along as loud as she possibly could.

"You'll have no voice left if you carry on" Jaime laughed putting an arm around Casey, her hands were still in the air and she threw her head back still singing along.

I never wanted to say this
You never wanted to stay
I put my faith in you, so much faith
And then you just threw it away
You threw it away

"That's the aim! If you leave Warped without sounding like you smoke forty packs of cigarettes a day then you're doing it wrong" she replied to Jaime, with a huge grin and a wink.

"My kind of girl!" He laughed carelessly and I smiled, Jaime is always so happy and I never get tired of being a witness of his happiness.

You were finished long before
We had even seen the start
Why don't you stand up, be a man about it
Fight with your bare hands about it now

Another smile spread widely across my face as I heard Savannah singing, her voice was quiet, not quite as confident and enthusiastic as Casey's shout-singing but her voice was actually good, it was soft. Not wanting her to catch me watching her and stop singing, I peeked out of the corner of my eyes at her and she looked incredibly engrossed in the concert, her head bobbed—just a little almost unnoticeable movement and it seemed like she was singing subconsciously without even realizing. A huge smile plastered her face and I was glad she was enjoying herself, that meant a lot to me. As if she sensed me watching her she looked at me from the corner of her eye and snapped her jaw shut, realizing I was watching her and hearing her sing, she blushed and laughed a little.

"I can't wait for her to sing Fences, I love that song" Savannah quickly spoke—I'm guessing it was so she didn't have to dwell on the fact I'd heard her sing

"Yeah that song is awesome!" I agreed and then added "Your voice is good by the way" her eyebrows furrowed but her lips turned upwards ever so slightly

"No" she laughed dismissing my compliment

"You're good" I insisted, she just shook her head and laughed shyly one hundred percent not accepting or agreeing with the compliment. She turned her attention back to the stage just as the intro of Fences began to play — like magic!

I'm sitting in a room
Made up of only big white walls
And in the hall
There are people looking through
The window in the door
They know exactly what we're here for
Don't look up just let them think there's no place else you'd rather be

I looked around, realizing Tony and Mike had wandered off somewhere, I looked at Jaime confused "Where's Mike and Tone?" I asked

"Beats me" Jaime shrugged not all that concerned, I laughed at how consumed he was at this whole experience.

"And it's obvious that you're dying, dying, just living proof that the cameras lying" Casey yelled along with Hayley

"You know, we're never going to be able to pry her away from this set" I said to Savannah, she leaned forward and looked past me at Casey, she giggled at her best friend and turned back to me.

"I know, she's a wild child!" Savannah laughed and then frowned as if she wished she'd have picked something better to say. The way she second guessed herself all the time made me want to know more about her, why she second guessed herself, why she was so shy, why was she so unsure of herself?

"Excuse me?" A timid voice from behind me sounded and I thought it'd be some kid wanting to get past us so they can get closer to the stage (we were pretty far back in the crowd for Savannah's safety) but as I turned around I saw a girl and her friend both looking extremely nervous, the way you would if you were in high school trying to ask your crush to prom. Once I'd turned around fully they both gasped and the shorter one of the two whispered to the other "Omg it is him" they both turned their attention back to me and began to shake.

"Can I help you?" I asked politely, unsure of what it was they were after.

"Um, er, yeah, you're Vic Fuentes, yes?" The taller one asked, with a slight accent—French or Italian I'm not sure

"Yeah.." I confirmed and both their eyes went huge

"Could you please take a picture with us?" They asked simultaneously and it hit me that they were fans. I was shocked that they recognised us because no one recognised us when we watched We The Kings' set, we're not all that big yet so I didn't expect anyone to even know who we are.

"Of course!" I smiled wide "Savannah, could you take a picture please?" I asked, feeling a little guilty that I had to interrupt her enjoyment of the concert but it would have been more of crime to ask Casey, she was too enthralled with it all.

"Sure" Savannah obliged with a smile. The shorter kid gave Savannah her iPod which had a pretty smashed up screen but was still useable. I wrapped an arm around each of their shoulders and smiled widely as Savannah got ready to take the photo, her tongue sticking out in concentration.

"Ready? Say cheese!" She giggled

"Cheese!" We all spoke in unison and she snapped the picture

"Thank you so much!" The girls gushed, taking the iPod back from Savannah.

"No problem" I smiled, cheerfully.

"So, is that your girlfriend? She's really pretty" one of them asked with a huge grin on her face—which is better than a scowl I guess—but it caught me off guard and I stood there for a few seconds wide-eyed, finally Savannah spoke up.

"No, I'm not his girlfriend!" She laughed and her cheeks heated

"We're really good friends though" I added, hoping it didn't sound weird

"That's cool! You're lucky you get to hang out with all the band" the tall one spoke, smiling, I was glad no one was being bitter towards Savannah, that would have made me angry.

"I know" Savannah replied shyly

"Anyway, we have to go, see ya! Thanks for the pic, Vic" they waved as they walked in whatever way direction.

"Well that was awkward!" Casey piped up and I cursed her unbelievably bad timing. However I nodded in agreement and so did Savannah. I realized the Paramore was finished.

"Anyone hungry?" Jaime asked

"Yeah! Do you think we could take the girls to catering?" I asked Jaime, knowing that catering was only for the bands but they had all access passes right? Surely that includes catering.

"I don't see why not" Jaime shrugged "Let's find Tone and Mike and find out" Jaime threw his fist in the air "I'm so pumped right now" I rolled my eyes

"How does he have so much energy?" Savannah asked, genuinely giggling at Jaime's silliness.

"God knows, at least you guys get to get away from him" I shook my head

"Hey!" Jaime hit me on the arm all mock-serious

"It's true!" I replied hitting him back

"Yeah, he's right!" Jaime laughed nodding in agreement.

"So to catering?" Casey asked raising her eyebrows

"To catering!" I answered. Casey hooked her left arm through Jaime's and her right arm through mine and Savannah hooked her left arm through my right arm—the four musketeers I thought lamely.
